Federal prosecutors have filed a sealed criminal complaint against Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked a trove of documents about top-secret surveillance programs, and the United States has asked Hong Kong to detain him on a provisional arrest warrant, according to U.S. officials.
Snowden was charged with espionage, theft and conversion of government property, the officials said.
The complaint was filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, a jurisdiction where Snowdens former employer, Booz Allen Hamilton, is headquartered, and a district with a long track record in prosecuting cases with national security implications.
A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.
Snowden flew to Hong Kong last month after leaving his job at an NSA facility in Hawaii with a collection of highly classified documents that he acquired while working at the agency as a systems analyst.
The documents, some of which have been published in The Washington Post and Britains Guardian newspaper, detailed some of the most secret surveillance operations undertaken by the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as classified legal memos and court orders underpinning the programs in the United States.
The 29-year-old intelligence analyst revealed himself June 9 as the leaker in an interview with the Guardian and said he went to Hong Kong because it provided him the cultural and legal framework to allow me to work without being immediately detained.
Snowden subsequently disappeared from public view; it is thought that he is still in the Chinese territory. Hong Kong has its own legislative and legal systems but ultimately answers to Beijing, under the so-called one country, two systems arrangement.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
How ironic.
Let’s put it out in open court and see what happens.
Why shouldn’t someone (Panetta?/Obama) be charged with leaking info that got Seal Team Six members murdered and got the Pakistani doc who helped get binladen jailed? That info was no less treasonous.
Espionage for the American people. Some Charge.
Does the US government have more right to privacy than the US citizen has?
Charges filed against snowden
Federal prosecutors have filed a sealed criminal complaint against Edward Snowden, Barak HUSSEIN Obama, Nancy Pelosi...
Oh, my imagination got the better of me. Please excuse that rant.
Aside from confirming that the Outlaw 0bama regime routinely violates everyone’s Fourth Amendment rights on a daily basis, precisely what else did Snowden reveal to prompt charges of espionage?
No kidding!
Saudi mole charges US citizen with treason for exposing fascism.
So we aren't even allowed to know what they're charging him with?
Snowden was charged with espionage, theft and conversion of government property, the officials said.
The "officials" don't have names? I don't take anything the government says. Maybe they charged them with espionage, maybe not.
I hope he (Snowden) tapped into Hillary and Barack’s stext messages and photos.
You better believe the government thinks it has a greater right to privacy than any individual. Not only that, they have the law enforcement officers and the lawyers to back up that assertion.
When the government no longer fears its citizens, the citizens have become subjects, worthy only of being studied like a bug mounted on a pin, up on a board.
Liberty for all is a principle very much in peril, and there isn’t all that much liberty even for the few.
This is why he went to Hong Kong—not because he was spying for China (or anyone else) but so that he might have a chance of not being handed over to the criminal U.S. government.
Hopefully Hong Kong won’t turn him over.
I don’t buy that the NSA does not know exactly where Snowden is at any given minute, there was no shocking news revealed. Anyone who did not know the Govt. was tracking citizens has been not paying attention since the time before the patriot act was first discussed.
That ain't gonna happen. The Republicans hate Snowden just as much as the Democrats do.
Buckwheat is toast.
There is no office left for President Obama to run for, so what do his approval ratings matter now?
