This is a long tradition - it is a ruling by the Rabbis, going back centuries - till at least the time of the Crusades.
Jews are not allowed to approach the site which belonged to the Temple, apparently because they might offer prayers in the wrong place, or tread on the Holy of Holys. This ruling is expected to stay in place until the Messiah returns.
Israeli rabbinical councils have reaffirmed the “no prayer at Temple Mount” several times.
That’s a little different question that concerns being on the Temple Mount at all, not about prayers.

Sorry - returns is the wrong word. A slip of the pen. I should say, until the Messiah arrives. This is a Rabbinical ruling.

I understand and appreciate your sentiment, but Jerusalem and its Temple were destroyed by both the bloody civil war within the city and the war with Rome without. It represents the destruction of a people, nation, religion, and a way of life. It’s a sad, tragic story that need not have happened if that generation living within its walls had heeded their last prophet. That compounds the tragedy.
“God’s ear” is attuned to those who humble themselves before Him, wherever they are.
All may freely come into the Holy of Holies, as it has been for 2,000 years. The Temple represented a wall of separation between Gentile and Jew and between God and mankind. Jesus Christ tore down that wall. And lest you think I’m anti-Jewish: I am not. Jesus was a Jew and I follow Him. I wish we all did.

The first time Messiah came, few listened and He was crucified for the sins of the world. He returned in judgment in 70 AD, using the armies of Rome to execute that judgment, just as He foretold before His death.
He told both His disciples and the religious leaders that He would send messengers to the “lost sheep of Israel”, but that the religious leaders would persecute them; drive them from the synagogues and kill them. He said He would hold those in that generation responsible. And He did so, just as God had done as recorded in II Chronicles 36:15-22. Instead of using Babylon and Nebuchadnezzar, Christ used Rome and Titus. The parallels are all there for people to see if they are interested.

His parousia (presence) was a coming in judgment, just as the Father came against nations in the OT.
Everything Jesus Christ did on earth and after He rose, including His coming in judgment upon Jerusalem in 70 AD, vindicated His claim that He is both fully human and fully divine: God incarnate.
New Jerusalem has come down and its gates are open to “whosoever will may come.”
But don’t take my word for it. Read II Chronicles 36:15-22 then read Isaiah 5:1-7. Then you can read those parallel passages in Matthew 21 and 23, to name a few. His “coming in the clouds” was after the same manner God of the OT came in the clouds in judgment against nations. Isaiah 19:1 being a typical example.

Jews generally are not permitted to pray or bring any ritual objects to the Temple Mount, which is considered Judaism's holiest site, in order to avoid confrontation with Muslim worshipers at the Al-Aksa Mosque, Islam's third holiest site.The Islamic infestation of the Temple Mount will have to be cleared. The best time will be after the next big war against Israel, after the defeat of the muzzie armies.

Well, there is a long flat area by the pagan temple currently occupying the top of the mount.
A good game of 9 pins would be less heretical than what goes on there now.
