Ammo purchasers in California must submit to background check, pay $50
American Thinker ^ | June 1, 2013 | Rick Moran

This California proposal that will probably become law is going to be very popular in pro-gun control states.

LA Times:

Californians who want to buy ammunition would have to submit personal information and a $50 fee for a background check by the state, under a bill passed by the Senate. The state Department of Justice would determine whether buyers have a criminal record, severe mental illness or a restraining order that would disqualify them from owning guns.

Ammo shops would check the name on buyers' driver's licenses against a state list of qualified purchasers.

The goal of the bill is "to ensure that criminals and other dangerous individuals cannot purchase ammunition in the state of California," said Sen. Kevin De Leon (D-Los Angeles), author of SB 53.

The vote was 22-14, with a few Democrats joining the Republican minority in opposition.

Sen. Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) said, "We are criminalizing legal, historic behavior in the state of California and putting onerous burdens and regulations and requirements on law-abiding citizens."

The Senate also OK'd a bill that would outlaw the sale, purchase and manufacture in California of semiautomatic rifles that can accommodate detachable magazines. The measure, SB 374 by Steinberg, also would require those who own such weapons to register them with the state....

This is the kind of legislation that screams out for a black market. Ammo ‘smuggled’ in from out of state will be cheaper and without the invasion of privacy.

I'm looking at Google maps... There's a whole lotta gun stores in Las Vegas.

IIRC, a Mexican generalissamo razed the Alamo to the ground. Want to try a different analogy?

The Alamo still stands and the Republic of Texas came into being as a result of the valiant battle there. My analogy is perfect. Sacrifices are often necessary in war. We can post all the feel-good, chest-pounding he-man stuff we can think of here and it will do no good at all. Unified national action is required, not snarky comments about California.

Is that the way Texas History is taught in Texas schools? I was atught (in Tennessee VOLUNTEER schools) that the fight at the Alamo bought time for Texicans to prepare their army to take on Santanna and drive him back across the river. The Mexicans won at the Alamo, but it cost them valuable time and material and soldiers. I’m willing to let Leftafornia go, if it awakens a somnabulent nation to the reality of sovereign death we face.

With a 90 Year Old Father and an 89 Year Old Blind Aunt to take care of, I won’t be able to leave for some time.

Looks like all us Conservatives will be doing is ceding ground to the Commies, State by State. It happened to my Brother in Colorado, and the Rats have their sites set on turning Texas Blue.

Drip - drip - drip, it’s the Commie way. They are a patient bunch of Traitorous Bastards and the Useful Idiots follow right along.

Yes. The Gestapo demanded our papers. I was quite shocked, to say the least.

About one in 10 license plates in the parking lot of most AZ gun shows are from California now. I have a feeling that the ammo lines are about to get much worse.

California is too far gone to help. The best thing for CA conservatives to do is move to a battleground state where their vote actual counts for something and help prevent the spread of stupidity from the left coast.

What if Travis, Bowie and Crockett had said that when the Alamo was under attack?

They would have lived to fight another day.

“It’s a damn shame was has happened to that once amazing, beautiful state.”

Yes, it is. I remember watching TV shows like Adam 12, filed in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, and realizing what had become of LA. Orange county is no longer orange but filled with illegal aliens and the orange groves gone. I remember as a child that Disneyland had land around it, but by 1990 it had become overgrown with concrete.

After the Newtown massacare, all law-abiding gun owners are to be judged & their rights restricted due to the actions of a lone madman.

After the Boston bombing (and 9-11) we are commanded not to judge all Muslims because of the actions of a few jihadis even though they all read the same Koran.

Strange.

Well, they sure acted like they had authority—badges, sidearms, etc. It was a long time ago and I was maybe 25 or so. This was back in the day when law-abiding people didn’t realize that the police aren’t always your friend.

If you’ve never been through one, it is very like a border crossing (except much faster), but they do stop every car and ask where you are coming from. If you have just been to Vegas or Reno and Calif. plates, no problem. But if you are from further afield, they take more interest.

As I understand it, they are looking to stop the importation of pests that might damage the state’s crops. I don’t know what authority they have under state law to look for and seize out-of-state fruit, but they do do a lot of it. I’m sure that ammo encountered during a fruit search would be seized as well. While Illinois doesn’t have border crossings, they do have warning signs regarding the importation of untaxed cigarets. California could pass a law making importation of untaxed ammo illegal.

What would have happened if you didn’t have a passport with you? Would they have been satisfied with a driver’s license?

I would think the overwhelming majority of motorists travelling from one American state to another don’t have a passport with them.

Indeed there are, and they all advertise frequently on the radio.

Clark County suck though as hand gun registration is required.

I'll give them this though, once you have purchased a hand gun they issue you a blue Sheriffs card. Once you have that you can purchase and walk out with no waiting period (2 day cooling off)

So thinking about supply and demand.... if most everyone in california quits buying ammo (because the government forces them too)..... then I guess there would be more supply and it would be cheaper in places like Oklahoma?

LOL....you would be best off hitting the gun shows here rather than the stores though.

Ammo is pretty scarce here and the stores get top dollar....and forget about Wal-Mart, their shelves have been empty for some time now.

I’m willing to let Leftafornia go, if it awakens a somnabulent nation to the reality of sovereign death we face.

Just for the record, the slogan "Remember the Alamo" unified and energized the Texians which led to their ferocious 18-minute triumph at San Jacinto. If brave men hadn't been willing to make a stand as the Alamo's defenders did, Texas might never have been born.

As for "letting Leftafornia go," why don't you include other states that are as Marxist or worse like Illinois, New York, Oregon, Washington, Massachussets, Rhode Island and several others? Even letting them all "go" won't wake anyone up unless we stage an Alamo-style battle to preserve our rights as an inspiration. We've been drugged by huge doses of Huxley's Soma, administered by government/media/academia over a long, long period. I think we're at end-game status.

Marxist or worse like Illinois, New York, Oregon, Washington,

Washington? What are you talking about? I sure as hell don't like the new faggot law, and you can't possess fully auto weapons (affects few), but you call no-state-income-tax Washington Marxist? Most of us east of the Cascades in particular live as in any flyover state...bitter clinging, concealed permits and all.

Okay - Seattle and Olympia then? It’s like CA, with the Marxist rot confined to big cities and the capital. The largest portion of CA is just as “flyover” as eastern WA and OR. The metropolitan tails wag the Left Coast dogs.
