CNN exaggerated poll numbers on Thursday's Newsroom to claim that Americans are writing off the scandals of the Obama administration.
CNN's Suzanne Malveaux and Alison Kosik reported that voters were "a lot more concerned about the economy" and were saying "to heck with the scandals." Yet poll numbers showed voters did not say "to heck with" the IRS scandal, as a vast majority still wanted an investigation of the IRS probe of Tea Party groups.
While a Quinnipiac poll showed 73 percent of voters deeming the economy a "higher priority" than "investigating" the scandals, 76 percent of voters still supported the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the IRS. However, CNN reported the news as if voters didn't even care about the IRS scandal.
Correspondent Alison Kosik noted:
"But right now with the economy kind of muddling along and high unemployment sitting on us at seven and-a-half percent, people say to heck with the scandals, to heck with the controversies, no matter who's in the White House, no matter which party is there, we care more about the economy than these scandals."
Anchor Suzanne Malveaux backed up Kosik's take at the end of the segment. "Alison, well put. To heck with all the other stuff. A lot of people still really focused on how they're doing in their own lives," Malveaux concluded.
And it should be noted that despite guns being way down on the list of top public concerns, CNN still hammered the gun issue for months with figures like Piers Morgan actively pushing more gun control.
Below is a transcript of the segment, which aired on May 30 on CNN Newsroom at 1:06 p.m. EDT:

SUZANNE MALVEAUX: And we see that there's a poll, there's a new poll that actually shows a lot of folks a lot more concerned about the economy than the political controversies that folks have been talking about in Washington. This is a Quinnipiac University poll. 73 percent say dealing with the economy is the higher priority than all those other controversies out there. Specifically, what should we be focusing on? What are Americans focusing on when they look at that number?
ALISON KOSIK: So when you look at these numbers, you see what's important. So these scandals that we talk about that President Obama's in, whether it's the IRS scandal or Benghazi, they tend to gain more attention, this survey basically says, these scandals tend to gain more attention when there's less concern about the economy. But right now with the economy kind of muddling along and high unemployment sitting on us at seven and-a-half percent, people say to heck with the scandals, to heck with the controversies, no matter who's in the White House, no matter which party is there, we care more about the economy than these scandals. It's all about, you know, what matters in Americans' lives.
For many of us average people the scandals don't touch us as much as, let's say, difficulty getting a job or paying the bills. So the bottom line with this is that the economy is still issue number one, especially when it's not doing well. And although we are seeing improvement in the U.S. economy, it's not going gang busters. There are still a lot of people out of work and a lot of people having trouble paying the bills. Suzanne?
MALVEAUX: Alison, well put. To heck with all the other stuff. A lot of people still really focused on how they're doing in their own lives.
American voters say 76 - 17 percent, including 63 - 30 percent among Democrats, that a special prosecutor should be appointed to investigate charges the Internal Revenue Service targeted conservative groups, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.
I double dog dare CNN to put its money where its mouth is.
Stop covering any of the scandals.
You know it’s got to be pretty bad when they actually focus on the failing economy to distract attention from other things.
So, if Americans aren’t concerned about the scandals, why should CNN do its job as good journalists should?
Nice try CNN but no one is falling for that.
The LA Times is trying to pull this “the public is not interested” stunt also.
CNN doesn’t care because it wasn’t attacked like the AP was. When it appears to them that their false god is removing their competition, they regard that as a good thing.
A 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue ‘talking points’ PSA. Played in every doctor’s office and hospital waiting room. Old folks homes and government schools.
See ya on the trains to hell, CNN.
As their ratings numbers continue to plummet, it seems to me that the people are really saying “To heck with CNN.”
The scandals and the economy are all important. One does not negate the importance of the other. In this case, the Obama administration’s actions and inactions are the cause of the lousy economy, 4 American deaths in Benghazi, IRS overreach, and a lying AG.
While it might be understandable the masses can’t identify why the DOJ-AP matter doesn’t reach them directly, the other two scandals should be raising the hackles of everyone. Yes, we have poll numbers that show more than 75% want a special prosecutor for the IRS flap, but d they even understand what the scandal entails? Meanwhile, the Benghazi coverup fades from the scene.
If America were blessed with a bright, interested, and involved populace, outrage at these scandals would be a firestorm by now, people would be taking to the streets demanding answers, and Obama’s poll numbers would be in the toilet. Unfortunately, even finding Benghazi on a map would be an insurmountable challenge for many of them. A dumbed-down electorate is the greatest boon of all for liberals. If the rubes can be kept busy concentrating on the shiny things and squeaky toys, they won’t turn their attention to the issues that truly matter.
I could be wrong, but I think more Americans are saying the heck with CNN.
That is probably the line CNN is trying to take to not cover not only the three main Obama scandals, but also to not focus on politics. They seem to have decided to move away from doing politics on the dayside part of the schedule and when they do it is not that much focus on Obama. You can see the change that has happened since Obama won re-election and Jeff Zucker took over. The channel is just wanting to cover tragedies and non-political stories or nothing effecting Obama.even Jackass Piers has cooled off on gun control advocacy.
Heck is where the people go that don't believe in Gosh.
You know that if CNN and the other alphabets would quit polling each others newsrooms they might actually find out something about what the country really feels outside their liberal strongholds.
