The sheriffs thought they were being summoned to the Capitol to discuss ideas for changes to New York's gun control law, the SAFE Act. Instead, Gov. Andrew Cuomo told them to keep quiet.

Cuomo invited its leaders to the Capitol last month, people briefed on the meeting said. The group included Sheriffs' Association Executive Director Peter Kehoe and Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss.
"We didn't get a response (to the analysis) from him, but we could tell after the budget was passed that none of those recommendations were taken into consideration," Moss said. "When we got there, we never got to the contents of the letter."
Instead, Cuomo pushed the sheriffs to stop publicly speaking out against the act, Moss said.
"The governor was of the opinion that the sheriffs around the state should not be interjecting their personal opinions in reference to the law," Moss said, adding that Cuomo said sheriffs can't do that and enforce the law.
One person briefed on the meeting said Cuomo threatened to remove sheriffs from office, a little-used power afforded the state's chief executive under the state constitution. Moss would not confirm this. He did say the meeting was heated at times, but overall he described it as "cordial."

Last week, the Sheriffs' Association as well as several elected sheriffs filed an amicus curiae brief supporting a federal challenge to the SAFE Act.

Remember, Cuomo was about the only positive story for Democrats from the 2010 election cycle and thus the king makers in the liberal media have been marching lock step for Cuomo ever since.
Sheriff’s are elected. I don’t believe the governor can remove them. They are the reason the state police report to the governor. Because the founding fathers created sheriffs, who essentially have an army. The FF gave the governor the state police (the name until the 1930’s when state police became Highway Patrol because of the Nazis.) Without the state police any county sheriff could arrest the governor. To forestall that type of political shenanigans the governor needed his own armed force. Using that force to collect revenue via speeding tickets came much later.
I hope the NY Sheriffs refuse to enforce these new anti-gun laws.
Yet the governor and many, many others had no problems speaking out against what were then the current laws.
Once they get their law in place, all dissent shall cease!
On a positive note, yesterday's news featured a development of interest to free men worldwide ~ it may well be possible to use 3-D technology to print up AMMUNITION.
That ought to give Cuomo nightmares.
The left hates freedom of speech. They have attacked it in every way they could.
Andrew Cuomo may go down in history as the unwitting architect of the 2008 financial meltdown:

Isn’t it true irony the gov rushed thru gun control legislation limiting magazines to 7 bullets but forgot to put in an exemption for law enforcement. The Hofstra student was killed, according to the Wash Post, after the home intruder was shot 7 times by the responding officer, the eighth shot hit the student in the head and killed her. So who is to say if the police were limited to 7 rounds, there may have been a different outcome. Who can know in advance how many bullets you will need to take down a single intruder let alone 2 or 3. Stupid laws always have unintended consequences. I guess the victim wasn’t permitted to have a gun to protect herself.
They're still called State Police in NY and SC where I now live. In fact, they're still called State Police in many states.

I always thought that it was phunny that Virginia is a COMMONWEALTH but they have a “State Police”. “State Police” the don’t even SOUND good.
Note to Cuomo on threatening the County Sheriffs with removal:
Don’t try this in Texas. Holy carp.
These tactics of intimidation come naturally to the Cuomo family.
Thanks.
Those guys are the State Patrol. They mainly do highway patrol and guard the Governor.
Fascism is the fashion.
