The good news – and the bad news – for Obama in scandal-tinged polls
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | May 19, 2013 | Brad Knickerbocker

Given the battering President Obama took this past week on a trio of political scandals, any public opinion survey results that aren’t dreadful probably are viewed with some relief at the White House.

That may be the clearest message from a CNN/ORC poll released Sunday morning.

According to the survey, which was conducted Friday and Saturday, 53 percent of Americans say they approve of the job the president is doing, with 45 percent saying they disapprove, CNN reports. That’s actually a tick better than the 51 percent approval rating Obama had in early April – but not enough to break out the sparkling cider.

"That two-point difference is well within the poll's sampling error, so it is a mistake to characterize it as a gain for the president," says CNN polling director Keating Holland. "Nonetheless, an approval rating that has not dropped and remains over 50 percent will probably be taken as good news by Democrats after the events of the last week."

Seems like Obama almost runs out of distractions, but he hasn't run out of gullible supporters.

Economy is very strong and growing?

Battering? Hardly. The king was quoted as saying. “I know nothing, I saw nothing, I heard nothing. Thus, nothing must have occured.” Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

So what did those polled see and learn last week that normal, thinking people didn't?

If you look back over the trend of the last several years, the only thing that has pushed him down persistently was emphasis on Obamacare. That’s why it was such a disaster to have a Republican Presidential candidate that had a fatal vulnerability there. I think the best angle for the Republicans to play is the confiscation by IRS of personal medical records and the central role that IRS has been assigned in enforcing Obamacare. They need to push that message for a week or two, see what happens to Obama’s numbers.

Who are these 53% who approve of Obama’s performance? In my circle of friends, the figure if probably 70% against. Granted, most of the people I associate with are active duty military or are veterans. It is very demoralizing to realize that a majority of the people in this country are that stupid. It makes me profoundly sad and a tad bitter at times.

And before you think all of my friends are Caucasian, think again. I have many Hispanic friends. Most of them don’t like Obama either. My black friends — well, we just don’t talk about politics because they can’t offer a good reason to support Obama and I will never persuade them to not like him.

Are we that stupid? The government wants us to think that a few rogues were able to use the IRS, FBI, Homeland Security etc etc to attack hundreds of their critics for more than 2 years and that Obama had nothing to do with it. Is anyone really that stupid?

Oh, but those so-called "scandals" are beginning to elicit some intelligent debate about the principles which undergird and protect individual liberty--a debate which has not been fully engaged for decades.

Perhaps the scandals, combined with and following on the heels of the President's attempts at propagandizing the Ohio State audience on behalf of large, powerful government may have come at an opportune time for the cause of liberty!

After all, if their professors haven't totally dumbed them into submission to government elites who will rule them, perhaps the specter of government officials going through their telecommunications records, IRS officials poring over any future earnings or how they use those earnings, and a State Department which fails to protect their fathers/brother/sisters who may serve as Ambassadors or Foreign Service employees and then lies about it, may cause them to wonder about the President's glorious claims on behalf of government power.

Recent events have triggered a very public, citizen, involvement in a battle of ideas which has been going on for decades! The problem is that, until now, most Americans went about their business and ignored it.

Today, they are engaged and beginning to learn the difference between two conflicting ideas about freedom and coercive government control. America's Founders identified the conflicting ideas as liberty versus tyranny. By Lincoln's time, he had a clear understanding of it and said this: "The world has never had a good definition of the word 'liberty.' And the American people just now are much in want of one. We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not mean the same thing . . . . The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act . . . . Plainly, the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of liberty."

But Lincoln could distinguish between real liberty and a counterfeit idea. Of the American idea, Lincoln declared:

"Most governments have been based practically, on the denial of the rights of men. Ours began by affirming those rights . . . . [These opposing ideas] are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time; and will ever continue to struggle . . . . It [denial of individual Creator-endowed rights] is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. . . it is the same tyrannical principle."

Of the Founding principle, Lincoln said: ". . . it is no child's play to save the principles of Jefferson from total overthrow in this nation. . . .The principles of Jefferson are the definitions and axioms of free society . . . And yet, they are denied, and evaded, with no small show of success. . . All honor to Jefferson - to the man who, in the concrete pressure of a struggle for national independence by a single people, had the coolness, forecast, and capacity to introduce in a . . . revolutionary document, an abstract truth, applicable to all men and all times, and so to embalm it there, that today, and in all coming days, it shall be a rebuke and a stumbling-block to the very harbingers [initiators of threatening change] of reappearing tyranny and oppression."

Yes, the battle of ideas is re-engaged in America today, in a manner not seen for decades.

American citizens are utilizing the new technologies that make possible close examination of the Founders' ideas in many collections online such as those at Liberty USA Foundation, WallBuilders, and in new books, such as Mark Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny." They are returning to the Founders' own explanation of their Constitution in THE FEDERALIST and to 1987's Bicentennial Year volumes such as "Our Ageless Constitution." See

Just as in Lincoln's day, those who try to fool the people, as the President did at Ohio State, into believing their definition of the role of government is authentic are being exposed for the charlatans they are--mere men who wish to gain power over the lives of millions.

They are being exposed by the "self-evident truths" "embalmed" in that revolutionary document described by Lincoln.

They can read the Founders' intent that ours is not a government's Constitution to limit people. Rather, it is "We, the People's" Constitution to be used, according to Jefferson, to "bind them (government) down by the chains of the Constitution."

What we are seeing now is a battle between forces who have one charismatic, but mere mortal (Krauthammer), man out there carrying the water for changing that concept in the minds of citizens who, they thought, had been dumbed down by decades of neglect and censorship of the ideas of liberty.

Providence may have outwitted them by allowing the development of technologies that make the Founders' ideas a powerful tool in the new battle.

Um, apparently. There are some zealots out there who would do ANYTHING for king hussein. But, that they (?) knew before the election and no one had the integrity to stand up and say something? Says a lot about lack of character and morals to me. Of course it was all a republican plot anyway that failed in it’s mission to derail king hussein.

I care less about poll ratings now. Obama is a lame duck POTUS!!! He is never going to run for POTUS again!!! I do not care one hoot about his poll numbers. What I do care about is the “eyes-on-the-prize” upcoming mid-term elections of 2014!!! This is the do or die event for the continuing of a “free” America. This is what these scandals are leading up to. Folks.....win the Senate and keep the House in 2014 and you destroy Obama & a good part of the Democrat Party. I am simply telling you, forget any poll, with our energized base, we can take the Senate and keep the House!!! The scandels are only going to get worse and Obamacare will destroy the nation. Hang in there.......and we can save this great country from the tyrants, Obama and his Democrat Party....who are out to destroy it!!!! FORGET THE POLLS!!!

This won't be a popular opinion, but women are mostly the problem. Why do you think Obama and his minions ginned up the war on women nonsense? He still has a decent majority of the brainless, American Idol-loving females that know nothing about anything. Once this demographic goes south, Obama is screwed (but that may never happen).

Women tend to support Obama by a few more percentage points than men. That is true. However, I think that there is a significant split in married vs. un-married women.

Once again, I am a bit out of the mainstream in that most women I know don’t like Obama either. I guess I just have good friends.

Of the women that I know who support Obama, almost all of these women are single, some with children.

There’s actually been a lot of polling data to support just that. Women vote in large numbers but are not informed in large numbers. … And by informed, I mean even aware of what the argument is about, or which side takes which stance.

When these things were published you would regularly see results such as Republican men understand this basic point of the argument 56%, Democrat men 44%, Republican women 38%, Democrat women 14%.

“Of the women that I know who support Obama, almost all of these women are single, some with children”

That is more than the entirety of the “gender gap”. Single mothers overwhelmingly support Democrats. married mothers with children who live at home strongly support Republicans. Women who are not single mothers are pretty much split between the parties.

Meaningless. Obama could be convicted of murdering his children and his approval would still hover at 50%. The country is mainly populated by morons. Evidence? Go look at the Dummie Underground.

The MSM attitude seems to be, “Oh, too bad about these scandals, they seem to be threatening BO’s power, what can we do to help him consolidate his power?”
