The House Ways and Means Committee holds the first Congressional hearing on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) subjecting applicants for tax-exempt status to higher levels of scrutiny based on political leanings.
Witnesses include Acting IRS Commissioner Steve Miller who resigned on Wednesday and the Treasury Departments Inspector General Russell George for Tax Administration.
Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) said the IRS' targeting of "American taxpayers based on politics is both astounding and appalling." He stated that the Committee will "get to the bottom of this practice and ensure it never takes place again.
In announcing the hearing, Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) said that it is "essential that there be a thorough and bipartisan investigation and effective remedial action.
Since June 2011, the Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating whether the Internal Revenue Service discriminated against taxpayers based on political opinions.
Nunes is being very efficient.
Wants emails, phone records, etc. from Miller.
Last four years.. hasn’t miller only been there less than a year?
Do any of you doubt that we are a country headed for fullblown tyranny? I’ll repeat what was stated years ago-this is about bringing us down...leveling the field...period. Zippy is there as a tool by the real powers in the world.
All the ammo buying by the government, starving the public
Exercise in re:house to house search, urban conflict Boston bombings
IRS
Bengzi
Snooping phone records
Fast an Furious
And more we do not know yet!
Just so folks know...
Bonuses in Gov. are not performance based....but for time served and who yells the loudest for that to be recognized.
He is an arrogant jerk. In answer to getting his records...’we will have to talk about that’....he needs to be slapped silly with a subpoena !before this hearing is over!
They really need to investigate the democrats from the states where these Tea Party and other groups are from. They cannot tell me that these crooked dems aren’t involved and don’t know what is going on politically in their states. They should all be investigated.
Someone should ask the guy, If he did nothing wrong, had no knowledge, nothing really amiss at IRS but some “mistakes,” then why did Obama fire him?
Apparently the GOP understands that very well.
Where is INGRAM? Why isn’t she being grilled?
Feels like a pony show...no answers just ridiculous comments, answers and political posturing.
Good question! I betcha Issa will bring her to his committee next week. This committee is full of GOPe and Rove has probably instructed them not to make waves.
So interesting he took this tack...Obozo’s firing announcement was called on so Miller follows the meme to make ‘Bozo look better...
“Zippy is there as a tool by the real powers in the world”
Right, and a good tool at that. But I look for that tool to break before the end of the year.
He's *requesting* these things? Don't congresscritters have subpoena power?
Very good question, and I’m sad you are not on the panel. :)
Lerner will appeal next Wednesday.
Got to run soon ...
The question at the ABA conference came from Washington-based tax lawyer Celia Roady, a lobbyist in the firm of Morgan Lewis. Roady is certainly well-versed in the issue at hand: She was named to the influential Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities in 2010 by Douglas Shulman, at that time commissioner of the IRS. Lerner is the director for tax-exempt organizations at the IRS. Roady was serving on the Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities while tea-party groups and other conservative organizations were being targeted by the IRS. Not exactly a question out of the blue Capitol Hill sources described the question as planted and say the IRS has informally admitted as much.
Neither Roady nor the IRS responded to requests for comment on this issue.
(snip)
The lobbyist Williamson mentioned, Celia Roady, was on a Friday afternoon conference panel, on the topic of “Denials of Application for Tax-Exempt Status.” Imagine that.
Nunes is the one who brought up the Cloak Room taps to Hugh Hewitt. Never heard of him before now.
