Scientists have found a source of water 2.4 km below the earth's surface near Timmins, Ont., that's believed to be at least a billion years old.
The water was found by geochemists from the University of Manchester and the discovery was published in the journal Nature.
The scientists don't know if the underground water contains any living creatures, but said it's high in methane and hydrogen, which could support life.
They found the water in the 2.7-billion-year-old sulphide deposits in a zinc and copper mine near the northern Ontario city.
Previously, no known free-flowing water passing through the cracks in the Earth's crust has remained isolated for such a long period of time.
Scientists used three types of evidence to determine the water's age, based on the noble gases in the water.

“there are a lot of dumbkoffs in this world”
Well, you can’t really blame them — While the Japanese and Chinese students are rigorously learning Math and Science, the liberal education system in the US is ensuring that our little darlings know how to put a condom on a cucumber and take birth control pills — We shouldn’t bother the youngsters with such serious academic discussion that would make them “smarter consumers” or “more informed citizens.”

I’ll drill a 2-3 km hole for a trillion.
Not all university research is publicly funded; much of it is paid for by the university; it’s how they justify not reducing tuition while they sit on huge endowments.

all water is a billion years old geniuses, it is the same water, cycling cycling since the earth was created.....For the most part, yes. You get it. There may be a little bit of oxidized liberated hydrogen out there that is relatively recent, but most of it has been around, evaporating, condensing, and making the trip back to where it evaporates again for a long time.

Age of water? So it wasn’t all formed at the same time in the early history of the Earth?

How does water exist in liquid form underground where, according to Al Gore, the temperature is "several millions of degrees"?
"Most people don't know that," adds Al, who's smarter than most people.
