In the 2008 Pixar movie WALL.E, humans so clogged up the earth with garbage they had to move to spaceships. Motorized chairs ferried the obese blobs portraying people of the future, who sipped liquids from massive cups and sat mesmerized by video screens.
It was both funny and scary in its assessment of Americas throw-away, fast-food culture where convenience is everything and self-control and direction outsourced to technology. At the time of the movie it was part of an emerging chorus of voices decrying Americans growing girth. Five years later it is almost impossible to go a day without seeing a news story on obesity; first lady Michelle Obama has made childhood exercise and healthy eating a top priority; and even purveyors of the triumvirate of salt, sugar and fat feel compelled to make amends for selling the stuff most blamed for everything from extra pounds to diabetes and heart disease. Coca-Cola, for example, recently promised to make lower-calorie drinks and nutrition information for its products more widely available around the world.
The consensus opinion is that fast food companies and convenience food makers are to blame for the fact that 69 percent of America is either overweight or obese. 2013s Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us by Michael Moss, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist at the New York Times, makes one of the most compelling arguments for a side that has compiled reams of evidence that Americans are victims of a plot to maximize profits at the expense of our cholesterol levels, blood pressure and body mass index.
As Moss uncovered, the processed food industry has made a science of finding the bliss point for sugar, salt, and fat and developed foods arguably as addictive as alcohol and drugs. It has also found ways to make it nearly...

Recipe please
One or two sticks of margarine
Four to six baking potatoes
One large red bell pepper
One very large (or two medium to large) brown onions
One can of corned beef
Seasoning Salt (e.g. Lawrys)
Hot Chili powder
Coarse Ground Black Pepper
In a large skillet, melt one stick of margarine
Wash and dice the potatoes. Leave the skin on
Wash and slice the bell pepper
Start the potatoes and peppers frying in the skillet.
Season liberally with the seasoning salt.
Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Add additional margarine as needed
While the potatoes and peppers are cooking, chop up the onion.
When the potatoes are well on their way to being cooked, lay the chopped onion on top
Season with chili powder to taste.
Stir the onions, potatoes, and peppers and let them cook.
While the mixture is cooking, chop up the corned beef.
Lay the corned beef on top of the mixture in the skillet
Season the corned beef with black pepper to taste.
Stir in the corned beef and keep cooking until the corned beef starts to leave crispy patches on the skillet under the mixture
Scrape those off with a spatula as they form and keep stirring until everything is heated.
Remove from heat, serve in shallow bowls topped with fried eggs.
NOTE: Remember to keep an eye on the flame. Has to be neither too high nor too low.
ALSO: Test the potatoes from time to time to monitor how cooked they are. If they havent cooked enough by the end the result will not be satisfactory.
Thanks.....

Interesting story, thank you!
I always walk with a 100lb. Golden Retriever.
My right arm is half inch longer than my left LOL.
>I’m still overweight, but I’m certainly not the budding grotesquerie that I used to be. <
How are your blood values, including blood pressure? My guess is you are in the more normal range, in addition to having lost the weight.
LOL!!!
There’s a solution for that.
Hold the leash in your left hand....
I eat tons of egg whites, it’s the perfect food IMHO, almost pure protein. I feed the yolks to the dog.
Funny story that former pro-football player Art Donovan tells about Spam. He took a whole case that was extra, I guess, because he loves Spam. His CO didn’t believe him, thought he was going to sell it to the locals. So, the CO ordered him to eat the entire case in a week. Art finished if off in less time than that. He was in hog heaven (pun intended).

The Consumer Freedom website does a good job of debunking these scare stories about food. Of course, the libs accuse them of being a front for corporate America.
I’ve got news for all these people obsessing over obesity now - there have always been fat folks. If there are more now than previously, it’s because we are living longer, have less strenuous work, and an abundance of food. I suppose the health Nazis would prefer we die young, be poor, and haul rocks all day.
As Thomas Sowell says, there are no solutions, only tradeoffs.
Hate to say but the obesity issue is very much real....just sit on a bench in the mall...and count the average size person. There’s far more obese people today than ever....and teenagers especially.
Perhaps, but how do you know? Can you prove it? No, nobody can. It is one of those things that everyone believes.
Regardless of whether obesity is more prevalent or not (and I am certainly willing to say it seems that it is), the solutions are not helping, it is not due to any “food addiction”, and, difficult as it may be to believe, it has also not been proven that losing weight increases one’s longevity. Yes, the various numbers look better, but does it extend one’s life? That is very difficult to say.

If I don’t run or workout, after about three days, I really become unpleasant to be around.

Anyone who is obese should be concerned about their health.
It’s ridiculous to assume otherwise...these people have breathing issues, heart issues, diabetic, and the lists can go on and on.
And yes there is “food addiction” better said Emotional eating. They eat when their happy , sad, mad, hurt, excited. and any other emotion.
I have a friend who “needs” to eat no matter what emotion is happening. In other cases people are abused and they “build” a wall of flesh around themselves. Others do so because they have difficulty maintaining relationships so they eat as it comforts them.
But to say that obesity isn’t harmful is a serious mistake.
Same here. I do sprints instead of jogging, but I need to do that or lift at least 3 times a week.
First, everyone eats for emotional reasons. What do almost all celebrations and funerals include? .. meals. If fat folks binge after an emotionally laden event, it is because dieting requires great control, and disruptive events are usually enough to disrupt that control. (See book Dieter’s Dilemma: Eating Less and Weighing More for details on set point and restrictive eaters.)
Second, there are many conditions and illnesses that coexist with obesity. When a person loses weight, many of the markers for those conditions improve. However, the question still remains whether weight loss improves longevity.
I am not disagreeing with you. I am merely saying that the proof is not there, regardless of how ingrained these beliefs are in society. Fat people are so despised, that there is no consideration of the actual science. For one thing, most people gain weight as they age, and aging is the number 1 risk factor for most diseases. How are the 2 factors separated when assessing risk? They aren’t.
