The Internal Revenue Service is apologizing for inappropriately flagging conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status.
Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt groups, said organizations that included the words “tea party” or “patriot” in their applications for tax-exempt status were singled out for additional reviews.
Lerner said the practice, initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati, was wrong and she apologized while speaking at a conference in Washington.
Tea-party groups complained endlessly about IRS harassment last year. February 28, 2012:
Tea Party chapters around the nation are blasting the Internal Revenue Service after the federal agency sent them letters demanding information about their politics, contributors and even family members.
In letters sent from IRS offices in Cincinnati earlier this month, chapters including the Waco (Texas) Tea Party and the Ohio Liberty Council were asked to provide a list of donors, identify volunteers, financial support for and relationships with political candidates and parties, and even printed copies of their Facebook pages…
Tea Party leaders say they were particularly offended by demands that they name donors and volunteers, which is required by law, but were also asked to list any political ambitions of board members or their relatives.
News of the harassment made it all the way up to Congress last spring — and yet only now, months after the election, are we finally hearing the IRS come clean. Go figure.
Remember, to this day, the left-wing Democratic water-carrying hacks known as Media Matters remain fully tax-exempt. Congressional hearings about this are now a fait accompli; what I want to know is who’s getting fired in the meantime. Obviously house will be cleaned at the Cincinnati branch. What about Lerner herself?
Stand by for updates.
Update: I want to know why the word “patriot” in particular triggered some sort of extra scrutiny.

Numerous Tea Party chapters claim IRS attempts to sabotage nonprofit status
I think a lawsuit is in order.
“Oopsie! Are our faces red~! ... so sorry”
And in the “No Shit Sherlock” category . . .
This an evil and old Rat scheme.
During the second comings of the Clintoons, I had republican relatives and friends across the country get hammered by IRS for the sins of donating to the Republican party.
In each case, they were professionals or owners of small businesses.
They were charged with the crime of making too much money!?!?
When GW was elected, I told them to send the head of their IRS the picture of GW and Cheney, sent out to their donors and say, “Oh, really!”
That worked for each friend or relative.
Might this be timed to try to distract Congress from their highly critical Benghazi investigation?
.
Oh By the way You should all be replaced, or given the new Obummer Neo NAzi Uniform so we know what to look for!
I just wonder how many had to pay more for accountants and tax specialist because of your tampering! And By the way the American Taxpayer pays your salary not Obummer or the DNC!
There's a thought that should keep every thinking American awake at night.
Yep, she claims their actions were not “political.” That is a bald face lie. If a group of employees is targeting certain political groups for extra scrutiny it most certainly is political.
The question yet to be answered is were those actions taken based on encouragement from the 0bama campaign, the DNC or the White House?
What is known already calls for some heads to roll at the IRS. What may be discovered could lead to trials for the federal crime of misusing the IRS.
NOTHING will happen until Democrats no longer control the Presidency and the GOP leadership is changed(and I doubt even then).
And of course, this was only a “low level” local decision, complicated, intrusive forms and all. Naturally, no one at the top knew anything about it.
It wasn't political. They just really hate tea so they targeted groups that they thought were promoting tea parties.
That's as good of an answer as we will ever get out of The Most Transparent Administration in History.
AND is was not politically motivated doncha know
Hate Crime!
Another day, another incident that would have gotten a PUBBIE kicked out of office....
So do they get compensation?
Have people been fired?
Have people been jailed?
