City Tavern in Philadelphia, where the Founders ate and drank (but mostly drank)
The RevWar/Colonial History/General Washington ping list
>>Here’s a bonus question: Who was the only triple signer (Articles of Confederation, Declaration of Independence and Constitution)?<<
Can I use Google?
:)
Even with all the noontime chatter, there was still a palpable sense of 'wow' and an inescapable 'presence', if that makes any sense.
Maybe most of the other diners were more focused on their sandwiches and what needed done at the office after lunch, but I found it quite moving.
It ranked with Arlington, Gettysburg, and the Archives in imparting a humbling and very tangible sense of heritage and 'presence'.
btw: please add me to the revwar ping list, thanks
I was fortunate to travel there in 2002. The City Tavern was on my list of places to see. I would argue that our founding happened more so at the City Tavern and not so much Independence Hall; many a philosophical discussion was had over a pint or port (as now!) and Independence Hall is just where they were formalized.
I don’t have a source for that assessment, just a hunch. But I do know that’s where the delegates repaired for drink, food, and talk.
