Justice Department to monitor South Carolina congressional election

(Reuters) - The Justice Department will monitor voting in Charleston County, South Carolina, in Tuesday's special election to fill a House of Representatives seat, the department said on Monday.

Former South Carolina Republican Governor Mark Sanford is facing Democratic newcomer Elizabeth Colbert Busch, sister of television political satirist Stephen Colbert, in the First District House race.

The Justice Department said in a statement it was monitoring the election under provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The law bars election discrimination on the basis of race, color or membership in a minority language group.

The department did not give a reason for the monitoring. Tuesday's vote will take place under South Carolina's new law mandating photo identification for voters, and Justice Department monitors observed primary elections.

The First District seat became vacant when Representative Tim Scott was appointed by Governor Nikki Haley to replace Senator Jim DeMint. He had resigned to head the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.

Why, exactly? I don’t think either one of them is black or Muslim, so what is the interest of the DOJ in this?

That said, I’m disgusted with SC voters for letting sleazy Sanford (who will lose) get the nomination. The guy just abandoned his state to go off and play with his mistress in Argentina, and now all is forgiven? Gimme a break.

My daughter, who lives in SC, told me that the other candidates were very marginal, so they may have some excuse. But I think he was probably the choice of the GOP-e, since he no doubt has money, is very liberal and thus is their kind of guy.

Right. No reason to monitor other than to ensure the fix is in for the democrat.

How about scanning thumb prints to make sure everyone’s vote counts as a whole vote not a diminished vote due to the inner city multi-voters?

They probably want to make sure Sanford wins, since that helps the Dem more.

South Carolina's new law mandating photo identification for voters

That should be required in every American election, with some sort of similar diligence (fingerprints, perhaps) in absentee ballotting.

Come to think of it, our computer age technology can handle 100% election fingerprint checking without disclosing how people vote.

Fraud, and multi-voting by the parasitic tribabal masses is going to be PROTECTED, but YOUR Taxdollars. Poll Watchers will be escorted out, locked out, or intimidated, to assure a Dem win, no matter what the actual vote is. The Presidential Election of 2008, and 2012, BOTH were the most-corrupt in History.

Mark Sanford had better do what Chris Christie did-—have lawyers waiting in the wings IMMEDIATELY.
