When He Talks Abortion, President Obama Pretends to Be a Libertarian
The Atlantic ^ | Apr 29 2013 | Conor Friedersdorf

Addressing Planned Parenthood last week, President Obama made what must be one of the least self-aware statements of his tenure. "Forty years after the Supreme Court affirmed a woman's constitutional right to privacy, including the right to choose, we shouldn't have to remind people that when it comes to a woman's health, no politician should get to decide what's best for you," he said. "No insurer should get to decide what kind of care that you get. The only person who should get to make decisions about your health is you."

It's no secret that

“Why? All libertarianism really boils down to is principled freedom.”

From Russell Kirk’s essay on libertarians:

“The ruinous failing of the ideologues who call themselves libertarians is their fanatic attachment to a simple solitary principle-that is, to the notion of personal freedom as the whole end of the civil social order, and indeed of human existence. The libertarians are oldfangled folk, in the sense that they live by certain abstractions of the nineteenth century. They carry to absurdity the doctrines of John Stuart Mill....”

All libertarianism really boils down to is principled freedom.

No it boils down to that which you avoid.

Libertarian Party Platform:

Throw open the borders completely; only a rare individual (terrorist, disease carrier etc.) can be kept from freedom of movement through “political boundaries”, eliminate the Border Patrol and INS.

Homosexuals; total freedom in the military, gay marriage, adoption, child custody and everything else.

Abortion; zero restrictions or impediments full 9 months.

Pornography; no restraint, no restrictions.

Drugs; Meth, Heroin, Crack, and anything new that science and marketers can come up with, zero restrictions.

Advertising those drugs, prostitution, and pornography; zero restrictions.

Russel Kirk who voted for an open Socialist?

I admit, i haven’t read anything of him other than his wikipedia page, but that doesn’t sound like someone whose principles I’d trust. No matter if he was a Founding member of the Heritage Foundation.

I readily admit I am very fond of Thomas Jefferson and consider him one of the greatest of our Founding Fathers.

You have very little faith in your fellow humans. Before laws against those kinds of things, there were other social pressures that kept people in line.

Pressures your rampant Nannyism has all but bred out of our Society, much to our detriment.

As for abortion, you are dead wrong.

It’s a shame we’ve been over this so many times and you still refuse to learn anything.

Please respond to post 40 about Browne and your making up that the libertarians changed positions on social issues like abortion or immigration or anything relevant to my posts.

There is a reason there was a schism in the Libertarian Party after Browne died.

So you accepted the party positions before Browne died in 2006, or before his presidential run of 1996, or 2000 or what?

By the way libertarians of course are pro-abortion, it is part of their platform and their whole reason for existence, showing that there are weak, or dissident libertarians that disagree on abortion doesn't change that.

You keep avoiding and evading the issues.

It boils down to that which you avoid admitting to (except for abortion).

By the way libertarians of course are pro-abortion...

Libertarians for Life

Liar. Your blanket statement is as false as saying "all Republicans are for a closed border and no amnesty". It just isn't true.

Nor do I support the gay lobbies attempts to redefine the religious sacrament of marriage in any way shape or form.

Homosexuality is a mental disorder and should be treated as such.

Again, you show that you aren't interested in the "why" or the "how" of things. You have your bludgeon and are determined to use it...

Good luck.

1.4 Abortion

Recognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith views on all sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration.

One popular misconception is that libertarianism as a political principle supports choice on abortion. And major elements within the libertarian movement (the Libertarian Party, for example) take abortion-choice stands. Nonetheless, libertarianism's basic principle is that each of us has the obligation not to aggress against (violate the rights of) anyone else -- for any reason (personal, social, or political), however worthy. That is a clearly pro-life principle. Recognizing that, and seeing the abortion-choice drift within the libertarian movement, Libertarians for Life was founded in 1976 to show why abortion is a wrong under justice, not a right.

Indeed, the non-aggression principle applies,

if you acknowledge that the “fetus” is a human worthy of rights.

There’s the rub. Those wanting the “right” to abortion simply deny the humanity of the developing baby.

LOL, describing an argument against the libertarian position, or some rino, Log Cabin disagreement that a FEW of them have does not change the fact of their ACTUAL, OFFICIAL POSITION ON ABORTION.

What libertarianism is really about.

While you post what you claim to WISH what libertarianism promotes in American politics, I will post what they actually promote and believe in, their actual political agenda as written and voted on by libertarianism itself.

1.3 Personal Relationships

Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government's treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships.

There is no "right" to commit premeditated murder.

"It's just a clump of undifferentiated cells"...

No. It's a human life. Unless it is killing you, literally, you have no "right" to kill it.

Roe v. Wade needs to be over turned. The States could then prosecute prophylactic abortion providers under murder statutes.

This is consistent with libertarian philosophy, and the US Constitution, regardless of the LP's plank statement.

Here's another libertarian thing, as a store owner I would be within my Rights to not allow gays in my store, require all employees to be heterosexual, and refuse to pay any benefits out to "non-traditional family units".

Try doing that now with all of your beloved governments laws...

Typical libertarian nonsense.

First they want you to help the leftists homosexualize the military, legalize gay marriage, gay adoption, immigration and child custody.

After they and the rest of the lefties get all that, which is actually doable, and which is happening, then the libertarians promise that somehow they will persuade the liberals to suddenly vote to restrict “gay rights” by allowing businesses to refuse service to them and take away some of their “equality”.

Libertarians, always saying “”Give us our lefty gay agenda and open borders and abortion, drugs, pornography, etc today, and we promise you a conservative utopia tomorrow””.

Because all you do is mislead, make up things, evade, slip around, and frankly, lie.

I have seen this before, the cult like libertarianism is sold with lies bent to fit who ever the audience is, a liberal audience gets told one version, a conservative audience gets told another version, and a libertarian audience gets the real version.

As a conservative, I can’t promote conservatism?

And the topic, which you have hijacked as per your usual modus operandi, is Zero pretending to be a libertarian...

Which, he isn’t. He’s a hard core Commie.

You’d rather argue over the LP’s platform planks and ignore anything that disrupts or interferes with your personal crusade.
