Must Washington fix our broken southern border? You bet.
Will the comprehensive immigration reform bill help? You bet it wont.
The number one flaw of the bill is it starts by giving amnesty to the unlawfully present population in the United States. As soon as the bill passes, those in the country contrary to U.S. immigration law are granted status to stay.
Amnesty immediately creates an incentive for illegal border crossings and overstays. Thus, the bills strategy would drive up the cost of securing the border. To make matters worse, the draft law states that anyone who was present in the U.S. before 2012 qualifiescreating massive opportunity for fraud, since there is no proof required that applicants have been here for several years.
While supporters of the bill trumpet its border security features, in reality, the law delivers nothing newother than the promise of spending a lot more money and running up our debt.
The bill trashes fiscal discipline, exploiting a loophole in the Budget Control Act (BCA) that allows Congress to spend more than allowed under the spending caps adopted in 2011.
In other words, Washington is willing to draft a bounced check to justify an amnesty bill.
To make matters worse, there is very little likelihood that that Americans will get much for the next border security buck spent.
The Secretary of Homeland Security has repeatedly stated that our borders have never been more secure. In the past five years, the White House has never asked for this additional border security funding. Yet, this bill lavishes billions of additional spending on the department with no clear requirements on how the money is spent. At least $2 billion could legitimately be labeled the Secretarys slush fund.
Supporters of the bill trumpet requirements to certify border security, yet its standards are in some ways weaker than existing law. Present law requires gaining operational control of the whole border, while this bill sets standards only for high-risk sectors. Since smuggling trails shift to where the security is not, even if the standards were attained in one area, the traffic would just go somewhere else.
In addition, the Department of Homeland Security has been trying unsuccessfully to define credible metrics for border security since 2004. Even if it had effective triggers, that does not guarantee a secure border. Border crossing conditions constantly change. Even if the goal is achieved, there is no guarantee it will stay that way.
We can do more to secure our borders. But we dont need an amnesty bill and bogus border triggers to make our borders safe and sovereign. Nor does Washington need to throw more buckets of money toward border security.
Our government could cooperate more effectively with Mexico and the border states. Congress could modernize our legal immigrant and non-immigrant programs, including effective temporary worker programs. The government could enforce our workplace and immigration laws.
In short, the promise of border security in this case is merely an excuse for a bloated bill that would promise anything to push amnesty, regardless of cost or practicality.
The only thing stopping us from doing just that is the political will.
No, but it gives us a new government commission after Homeland Security sits on their hands for 5 years.
What a deal!
Our son has just started a new chef job. All his kitchen staff is Mexican. He said its good that he speaks enough Spanish to give them instructions. Its a very upscale restrauant too.
If V Corp were brought home and given the mission, “Secure our border,” how long would it take?
"The [immigration] bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs." - Ted Kennedy, 1965
"This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.1 to 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forward another amnesty bill like this." - Ted Kennedy, 1986
"Now it is time for action. 2007 is the year we must fix our broken system." - Ted Kennedy, 2007

Teddy wrong on amnesty? Teddy's been wrong on a lot of things.

Overnight.
It has to be a huge comprehensive bill because that is the only way for THEM get ‘path to citizenship’ passed.
I keep hearing by many both parties and a few here claim that not many of them will want citizenship anyway, if that is true then why is it a Dem precondition for a bill that GOP RINOs caved to so early?
Rubios delay full amnesty for 10 years reminds me of Ryan's cut medicare in 10 years. Who cares what happens in 10 years right? And what if this amnesty passes and Latinos still come out and vote Dem in 2016, and of course many in GOP are turned off by it???
How about heavy fines for any business that hires illegals?
Also, no government benefits for anyone not proving citizenship.
For many years Rubio was was Fidel Castro’s finest agent, he had most of us fooled. Fortunately, this ammnesty bill came along and exposed him.
This “immigration bill,” like all others before it, never was about border security. It’s just a pandering exercise to attempt to buy votes from a constituency that’ll never vote any way but democrat.
I heard Grahamnesty on Hannity’s radio show last week... went on and on about how the illegals will have to go through this hoop and that to attain citizenship... never mind the follow-on legislation that will inevitably come, pushing for shorter timeframes. He wants us all to believe the political orientation of the hispanic vote will shift “immediately” once this bill is passed. He’s full of more sh*t than a Christmas goose if he thinks we’re biting that one.
Its obvious to anyone paying attention but many, many Americans still buy the 'our immigration system is broken' BS.
I have no faith in this country’s ability or desire to retain its sovereignty. Far too many at the levers of power want it brought asunder.
So long as the president and the attorney general are black, the border will never be secure. There is no enforceable law making the law be enforced
As long as we have an influx of hispanio trash, the collapse of black culture can be ignored. Blacks have taken over and destroyed the cities but that is being ignored with the focus on illegals.
They dont give a damn about citizenship. Mexicans are proud Mexicans. Thet do not love America.
They just want to use America economically.
That's irrelevant. White administrations have long proven they such at securing the border, too.
No, it is a racist thing
What they "love" about America is the brightening prospect of an anschluss of at least half of our territory with Mexico. Who would've thought all those years ago, America would be so effectively occupied and subdued by legions of invaders from a third-world country?
