Rory Gallagher was the real deal.
When I was a kid I idolized him, I dressed like him.
I still do.
Scruffy hair, flannel shirt, blue jeans, boots, smile.

ROCKUMENTARY: APRIL 27, 1976

Where were you on Tuesday, April 27, 1976?

I was working outside Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley in a computer job with an oil company’s R&D division. Not exciting! The arrival of Disco with full force put an end to socializing because I couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time, much less dance to certain fixed steps. When sufficiently drunk, I could do the Uncoordinated Freestyle, but that was as far as that went. Having overdosed on the popular music scene when I was in professional broadcasting, I returned to classical music, which had been my first love. But I still listened to KHJ on my way to and from work, so I had some knowledge of what was going on around me.

Let’s cue the Rockumentary theme!

San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”

This was to be the single biggest success for Elvin Bishop, who had played guitar for a Who’s Who of rock bands over the years. It came in at #10 this week.

This is one of the indisputably great recording of the Seventies. A rhapsody is an unstructured piece of music, with one musical idea rapidly succeeding another, and that’s exactly what Freddy Mercury and the guys did here. The harmonies are incredibly tight. It came in at #9 this week.

Queen: “Bohemian Rhapsody”

I always feel like eating a bit of Humble Pie when I hear this tune, and I don’t necessarily feel “Hot and Nasty”. Frampton went solo in the Seventies, and this one came in at #8 this week.

Peter Frampton: “Show Me the Way”

Good. I don't want to be all alone at the Canteen.

(I never watched "The X Files" when it was on TV, but I'm catching up with it now via Amazon streaming video. Every time I hear a strange noise, I get jumpy.)

Gabriel Kaplan turned his comedy routines about Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn into a successful TV show, “Welcome Back, Kotter”, and John Sebastian, late of the Lovin’ Spoonful, did the theme. It came in at #7 this week
