Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes six short of the number necessary for passage. This is a pretty shameful day for Washington, said Obama afterwards. It wasnt exactly a red letter day for him, either.
Barack Obama is a lame duck president. Nobody listens to what he says anymore, nobody is interested in winning his approval and nobody much cares if he thinks they have let the country down. This is typical for a second-term president who has lost all their leverage because theyre no longer running for office and everybody is patiently waiting for the day when he quits the White House. But Obama's difficult personality has doubled the size of the challenge. Gloating in victory, adolescent in defeat the Prez doesnt make it easy to work with him. Why should conservative senators give him a legislative victory after he has spent four years painting them as knuckle-dragging rednecks who hate women and the poor?
Whatever your position on gun control, yesterdays events are a damning indictment of Obamas presidency a flash of style, lots of soaring rhetoric and, when the votes are actually counted, little show for any of it. America has four more years of this lame-duck president telling them that it has let him down. If only he could tear up the Constitution and rule by diktat he might save himself a little disappointment. Alas, American democracy is a stickler for rules.

The reason he’s not as popular with the ‘rat/commie politicians is that he’s going too fast, turning up the heat on the frog too fast, waking the sleeping giant of patriotic opposition.
Gallup: Only 4% of Americans Think Gun Control is an Important Problem
90% support from who?
I doubt he has that much support from his immediate family and staff.
On the other hand, he crammed health care into law despite 80% AGAINST, so what’s that mean?
Can someone please cite this 90% number? Did this report check their Excel formulas like Reinhart and Rogoff did not?
I hope Cuomo is seeing the writing on the wall.
He is up for re-election next year.
Maybe Paladino will run again AND ignore the idiots in the GOP who ruined his campaign after he kicked their asses in the primary.
That number is total BS.
Now they (the ususal suspect) are claiming: Manchin blew it.
That's as far as I could get.
Who knows where he gets his 90% figure, but all my liberal relations are citing it like it’s proof positive the republicans in congress are evil.
80% SUPPORT?! From who? Libtard propogandists media scum... that’s about it! The number I’ve been seeing is around 4%, and the limp-wristed pansy Republitards still won’t grow a set.
If I remember correctly, it was from a poll paid for by MSNBC and conducted by Quinipiac University (which happens to be located in Connecticut relatively close to Newtown). So it is suspect to begin with. Also the way the question was asked was vague, "Do you think background checks should be required for gun purchases?" Not about the Manchin-Toomey bill specifically....
A recent shows 4% consider gun control a priority issue.
“It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales”
Pretty sure this is the law right now.
It depends on how you phrase the question. I have no doubt that 90% think that psychotic mass murderers should be prevented from buying guns. The problem is that's not what Obama's pet legislation does. (Or would have done anything at all to stop Adam Lanza.)
This story is written like we wish it was.
Obama still has the power. Harry Reid his suck butt is still running the Senate. This bill or one like it will be back and Obama will still be writing Executive orders.
Watch closely and we might see Nancy Pelosi back as Speaker.
Then what will we have to say about a Lame Duck Obama.
We won a small victory on that we are losing in many Democrat States such as mine in Maryland, where we have an iodiot by the name of O’Mally who is bleeding us dry and going after our guns.
just not 60% of the Senate including Harry Reid.
More to the point, I believe the Dems think he’s going too fast, too far, and putting their reelection hopes in danger.
If they could, they’d go just as fast and far if their jobs were secure.
