The race goes on for hours. I used to work five miles from the start, and it took almost 90 minutes for all runners to pass us.

The “official” runners make up a small percentage of the group. Unofficial runners number in the thousands.

The road into Boston is full for hours after the winners come in. Real party atmosphere.

They probably did trial runs on several events and determined that the Marathon was the easiest target.

If it were part of the actual bomb, certainly.

If it were, say, a cell phone blown out of the hand of a nearby spectator, maybe not.

Agreed, if it had been an IRS or other federal building, a McVeigh type would have been my first guess being April 15th. But a marathon reeks of Islamic terrorism and the fact the Marthon fell on tax day a coincidence.
