(CNN) A key player in negotiations over potential gun control legislation said on Tuesday a planned GOP filibuster of the bill wont occur if Democrats allow Republicans to bring amendments up for a vote.
Sen. Tom Coburn, speaking on CNNs Erin Burnett Outfront, said a filibuster thats been promised by more than a dozen fellow Republicans would prevent Americans from seeing where their elected officials stand on the issue.
Its not going to be filibustered, Coburn said, adding that the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needs to offer "an open amendment process" in order for Republicans to agree to allow a vote.
"We ought to have this debate. America needs to know where we stand," Coburn continued, adding Thats what the Senate should be about."
The Oklahoma Republican, who enjoys a top or A rating from the National Rifle Association, was among a bipartisan group of senators working behind the scenes on legislation aimed at expanding background checks on gun sales.

The talks hit a snag, however, on the issue of record-keeping Coburn vehemently opposes any attempt by the federal government to retain information on gun owners.

Yeah, they would never abuse a database crammed with information about law-abiding Americans, right?
Didn’t all these politicians take an oath to defend the Constitution & the Bill of Rights? They should be impeached if they break that oath. What a bunch of hobo losers.
Tom Coburn sure seems to enjoy being the voice of “moderation” against his more conservative fellow Republicans. It must be all those “Gang of 6, 8, 14, etc.” he keeps joining to sell out his conservative colleagues’ ideals. He sounds more and more like Lindsey Graham and John McCain every day.
If Republicans are of the belief that there must be an up-or-down vote on bills that violate the most unambiguous part of the Bill of Rights, then what is the purpose of serving in the Senate?
I am so sorry I ever voted for Coburn. But in my defense, he has changed over the past 3-4 years.
As far as his line about not knowing where my senators stand on the issue if the filibuster happens, BUNK! If the filibuster happens, and my senators don’t side with the filibuster, I’ll know exactly where they stand.
The FBI is not supposed to retain info about background checks. They do anyway, because the legislation never specified a penalty for doing so.
Have an amendment saying that having possession of background check info, or permitting background check info to be retained, is a felony punishable by 10 years in prison, with no statute of limitation. So any FBI executive that orders retention, or any FBI IT person making a backup of the info, or any FBI IT person making it possible to make backups of the info, goes to jail. And while the current administration would not prosecute, they have to worry about future admins.
A mandate that something be done, with no prescribed penalties to not doing it, is just window dressing. See my post #67
It's an end-around the Constitution.
Failure and complicity.
