We had some problems with fighter jets breaking the sound barrier in the 60’s, and a lot of people complaining about the noise. I actually saw one guy do it, I was standing outdoors and saw a fighter jet dive at the town and pull up at a few hundred feet, shaking the whole town with a sonic boom. I can’t identify the type at this late date. No sonic booms from the B-52s, just a loud rumble and a cloud of black smoke.

My Dad worked on the B-29 assembly line at Wichita before he got drafted and sent to Okinawa.

A pair of FA-18’s (four engines) landing at El Toro, over The 5 Freeway had the same affect. Lord how I miss those guys (Base closed in 1997).

B-52s were flying low level training flights from Omaha across Southern Iowa when I was in high school. One spring day in study hall, the library windows were open when one of our nuttier students noticed one of these big bombers sailing quietly past.
He yelled “AIR RAID !” at the top of his voice and dived under the table. The 80 kids in the room roared...

That is one mean-looking aircraft. No one is in his right mind would want to fool with it.

Here comes Crazy Uncle Joe for your guns America!
Wake Up!

The reflection off the pilots helmets look like eyes, pretty cool. Looks like a roomy cockpit, which is good considering the very long missions they fly now.

B-52s are still flying and good to go.

( I still get a thrill up my leg when spell check doesn't recognize the name/word Obama!)

Obama’s thinking, “I’d like to have that as Air Force One.”

The first test flight of a B-52 was in 1952

Yeah, it was probably the “new” jet fighters.

One of my thrills as a kid was watching a B-36 fly low over my house in Des Moines.
