Greek newspaper To Vima claims a secret report details millions of euros owed to Athens by Germany for World War Two reparations and unpaid loans.
The story has been picked up by the online edition of German newspaper Der Spiegel, who quote Greek organisations calculating the value of loans from Athens to Berlin taken by the Nazis between 1942 and 1944 at 54 billion euros.
Der Spiegel also puts the figure owed to Greece for reconstruction after the Second World War at 108 billion euros.
Though the details of the report are being kept under wraps by the Greek Finance Ministry and Greek paper To Vima refusing to print any specific figures, the sentiment is likely to anger those in the debt-stricken country facing austerity.
Germany is often a target of protesters in Athens, as cuts are made to ensure Greece gets two more bailout payments from the EU and IMF worth nine billion euros.
To prevent more anti-German sentiment, for now, the report is classified TOP SECRET, but To Vima is urging the Greek government to publish it.
WWII reparations — Thanks markomalley.
Ja Ja auber it costs money ven you loose var
So how much does Europe owe us?
Don't you remember, we paid Germany reparations after the war.
Since Germany is the instigator of WWII, they are to be slaved for the whole Europe forever? Wasn't that the seed (to pay back WWI) that propelled Hitler to power? 2013 is how many years since WWII?
Whiteys will never be able to pay back the slavery sin here, too?
Wow. So it only took the Greeks seventy years to think of this.
The bookkeeper was sick, the accountant was busy, and it wasn’t a priority until now, OK? Give me a break!
Then there are those debts Europeans owe the United States for WWI and WWII ~ all due in GOLD ~ which ain’t what it usta’be.
Germany should have paid this off in triplicate a long damn time ago, get with it Germany
it’s Greece’s to piss away if they want—hey if that damn Germany which caused two world wars owes them money they damn well better cough it up and fast
It would seem the issue is about claimed reparations.
Considering what a tight leash the U.S. had on Germany for years after the war I don’t see how they missed making Germany pay back all reparations.
This statement is BS as the Nazis didn't "borrow" money during those years they simply took it. Germany may have taken money from Greece but they didn't "borrow" it. Just as they didn't borrow money from France or any of the art treasures, food and other items they took from France during the war.
