For a candidate known for one of the past decades most colossal political mistakes, former Gov. Mark Sanford has run a nearly flawless campaign for the 1st District.
As a result, Sanford is on track to win the Republican runoff and maintains a solid position in the special election for the coastal, GOP-leaning district.
On Tuesday, voters will determine whether Sanford can proceed with his political comeback over his GOP opponent, attorney Curtis Bostic. Palmetto State Republicans are confident Sanford will win the GOP nomination and continue to face Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the May 7 general election.

It was beyond bizarre. Unless he's had a brain tumor removed that affected his judgement, I wouldn't vote for him.
He was lying then, how do you know he is not lying now?
“What if there was a big disaster in SC while he was on the Appalachian Trail with Mamacita?”
Then his name would be mud like it is now with some conservatives.
His work in the US House was outstanding. Perhaps that’s his annointed political spot. I’m more than willing to give him another chance to redeem himself. I say that as an individual who is flawed. Giving people another chance is the American way.
Good grief, I could see voting for him in the general when your down to either Sanford or the Democrat. At that point you are left with no real choice. But in the primaries? You really think that's the right message to send? That conservatives are fine and dandy with someone like Sanford who was only just recently engulfed in an embarrassing scandal entirely of his own making? Don't we make fun of Democrats for returning scoundrels like this to office in safe Dem districts.
“...will be along shortly to tell us that sexual peccadilloes of conservatives are far worse than gun-grabbers, abortionists and commie mass murderers,”
The sexual peccadilloes of conservative candidates are in the long run equal to gun-grabbers, abortionists and commie mass murderers, because they ensure the latter will be elected.
“...and we should all stay home, not vote and let some leftist democrat Nazi slip in as a representative.”
We’re still in the run-off to determine the Republican candidate. I’m not from SC. I don’t know how strong a candidate Bostic is or what the odds are for either against Busch. I do know that the MSM will dig up everything from the Appalachian Trail adventure and show it in the worst possible light as soon as the run-off is over. The Rs in SC need to factor that in as they vote.
Has the race been called yet?..polls closed at 7.
How do you know when a politician is lying? Their lips are moving. You show me one honest politician and I will show you my winning Powerball ticket.
By nature they are all liars and thieves, we just have support the ones that will support our cause the most strongly. And yes I am sadden by it.
Sanford will be able to claim the Latina vote with his Argentine squeeze.... Is the little gal still on board?
I sent money to Bostic and I will send money to Colbert Busch. Sanford is not going to flaunt that whore with my help.
I finally just threw up and moved on. SC can’t get rid of Shamnesty and I guess Mark Sanford is the best they can come up with out of the entire SC population to send back to DC.

Good analysis. I agree with you 100%.
“Smarmy wife”? Are you talking about the woman he vowed to love, honor, and cherish until death and then absolutely and egregiously humiliated on national TV? The one that financed his political career? And don’t even get me started on the 4 young boys he abandoned. She should have cut off his lying balls and fed them to the dog. If this piece of shit can get elected, the people of South Carolina are out of their collective minds - and I don’t care who he’s running against.
I’m a South Carolinian, though not in that district. Romantic love or infatuation (Latin root related to fool) makes people do foolish things, and apparently this was more than a sexual dalliance. I wouldn’t support him for President (except against somebody like Obama) but think he could do the job of Representative well, better than most (I don’t know his opponent in the primary and am not taking a position on that). As a governor, he stood up against the encroachment of the federal government. I’m grateful for what he did then despite the harm to himself and his cause that later resulted from his extramarital affair.
It’s not as if there were no provisions for handling emergencies if they hadn’t been able to contact him. If anything major hit the news, I’m sure he would have shown up quickly. In my entire lifetime I don’t think South Carolina has had an emergency (including hurricanes) that it couldn’t handle fairly well without the governor showing up right away. If we could get most of the rest of the government — federal and state — to disappear for a while into Argentina, we’ll probably be better off.
Whata sitseeation even if he wins he’s a loser. If he was in North Carolinathey’d tar him (play on tar heels). As it is the media will along with him the tea party and its movement.Levin replayed Reagans CPAC 79 speech where he warned about agenda driven politicans.
Mega-dittoes! A lying, cheating pos who abandons his family is not one to be trusted.
I don’t trust politicians (even the ones I support), and don’t trust people in general.
To paraphrase Forest Gump: “Selfish is as selfish does.”
I will add that it’s possible that Sanford is the better candidate, even with the baggage. The American public is quick to forgive, and name recognition is money in politics.
So then what’s to stop John Edwards from making his triumphant comeback?
Sanford was my favorite realistic candidate for the 2012 nomination until the Appalachian episode. I think he’ll make an excellent addition to Congress, so long as he can keep his pants on.
