WASHINGTON U.S. officials quietly are expressing concern that North Korea could use its space launch vehicle to explode a high-altitude nuclear device over the United States, creating an electromagnetic pulse that would destroy major portions of the U.S. electrical grid system as well as the nations critical infrastructures.
The concern is so great that U.S. officials who watch North Korea closely are continually monitoring the status of the North Korean space launch vehicle, whose status could suggest a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States.
They are aware of the three-stage missile North Korea launched last December that also orbited a package, which experts say could be a test to orbit a nuclear weapon that then would be deorbited on command anywhere over the U.S. and exploded at a high altitude, creating an EMP effect.

#22 - Inclined to agree. My first action was to verify the article via multiple sources. Found several, but they all used WND as the original source. If we are going to continue to build the credibility of the “new media” we’re going to need to do better than this, it’s about as convincing as network news.
“You’re going to be the designated driver on this thread, and I don’t envy you.”
Yeah, I know. Some mornings it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed, you know?
I’ve been trying to get the discussion back on topic. I need to apologize to chemicalman for derailing his thread... it wasn’t intended.
The threat is very real.
“When you ask for a ban on FR, you are asking that other freepers and I be denied freedom to post certain things.”
Ah, I see your point. I didn’t think of it like that.
Well, I withdrew my request many posts ago and wish I hadn’t said anything.
I was surprised when I saw the link in the sidebar — frightened for a moment, I have to admit. Then I saw it was a WND post and I felt like my emotions were being played. Shouldn’t have posted in passion. My fault.
I do think that it would be good — a compromise? — if WND posts could be marked WND at the outset. Maybe something like:
“WND: U.S. on alert for nuclear blast overhead”
That would be ok, and wouldn’t stop anyone from posting. But it would warn that the source was WND from the title.
Acceptable?
Thanks Pastor. Had seen the link and intended to go read. Your post to me made it all the easier. Am reading the link. Thanks Justa for the link.
>>> Well, I withdrew my request many posts ago and wish I hadnt said anything.
I have to admit i didn’t read ALL the posts following your intial one. I think it’s admirable you demonstrate the ability to see other’s viewpoints.
As for WND, my experience tells me that they are one of the very few outlets that dare fly in the face of the “New World Order” we are currently under.
Are they self promoting? sure they are. What they do costs money.
Do they get anything wrong? Who doesn’t?
Are they fear-mongering? I can’t think of a single liberal democrat who would disagree.
Should we really be considering warning readers of WND’s credibility? Who makes that call? Who’s next if we do?
One of the greatest aspects of FR is that EVERYTHING gets scrutinized and tested... simply by the nature of the way forums work. It’s not broken. Lets not fix it.
“As for WND, my experience tells me that they are one of the very few outlets that dare fly in the face of the New World Order we are currently under.”
Actually, you have a point about that. They haven’t given up on the eligibility issue even when *everyone else* has turned away from it.
Thought-provoking post... thank you.
Having never used an EMP against an enemy, little is known about the weapon's range & effectiveness. Used over NK, it could also affect China, SK, Russia, & Japan.
This is a first strike, nuclear attack on the REGION. China and/or Russia will immediately go into nuclear crisis mode & the world could be minutes from global nuclear war. Do you trust Putin & the Chinese to ignore the use of nuclear weapons IN THEIR BACK YARD? Or will they respond with EMPs of their own?
Looking at a nighttime satellite image of NK, an EMP is a waste of technology, given that it doesn't affect candles & cooking fires.
However, a Russian or Chinese retaliatory EMP strike on the USA would be devastating, blacking out a huge part of the country, placing millions of people at risk of death from thirst & hunger. Thousands would die immediately from being cutoff from life sustaining devices. Communications, transportation, & commerce in the affected area would stop instantly. The enormity of the damage would be so great that any government effort at rescue & relief would be like a fly giving CPR to an elephant.
So, in an effort to kill a fly, let's not use the shotgun that might upset the neighbors. Rather, let's use some very precise weapons that will scare or blast the underwear off the little fat fool; AND remind our more potent enemies that we can still kill a fly at 10,000 miles range without making a ripple in his toilet bowl.
likewise :)
Thanks for this thread. Much appreciation. Not one to say too much after reading a thread of this type. Although the thought regarding the shuttle program is documented am a bit disturbed with myself for posting that information. A thread such as the one posted by yourself and the posts entered by each participating gives pause to mind and spirit, and having a pause to mind and spirit is what makes this forum unique. Once more ... Thanks for this thread.
Thanks Vince for the link.
“But with the USS McCain in the area I doubt they could get a missile very far.”
I think you’re missing the point of the article. They’ve already launched a missile, but instead of targeting us directly, this missile put some unknown device in orbit. If that device is an EMP weapon, and the Norks do have those blueprints courtesy of Russia, then it could deploy from orbit to detonate over the US.
A ship sitting next to NK could do nothing to attack a device coming at us from orbit.
“Don’t think the Norks have a warhead capable size/weight wise yet.”
An EMP warhead is actually very small and low-yield compared to traditional nukes, well within NK capabilities to produce.
Net
Daily.
They all hated it when the Bush administration tagged NK as part of the AXIS OF EVIL. Guess Bush was right.
The USS McCain is not worth a bucket of warm spit, unless its captain has the authority to open fire on any missile launch without need of checking with DC first (having to get permission just guarantees the missile will be out of range before DC responds).
IF you can figure out how to get an EMP with an effective radius big enough to affect most of the DRPK without hitting Seoul or the PRC as well.

Good book. David and a couple other folks are currently trying to get it made into a major motion picture. Official trailer should be out soon.
While our commercial grid is for the most part not EMP hardened, our military equipment and infrastructure is, and has been for a long time. So an EMP would not knock us out militarily, at least at first. (It would affect factories that would supply parts etc, but not the initial military hardware and equipment.)
