A little squirt to be, given that the date in your original post was a year and a half (to the day!) before I was born.

Like the Maestro, I was in my final year of High School in March 1966. About 18 months shy of enlistment in the Navy. A very interesting time. IIRC, it was Confucius who said "May you live in interesting times" - also referred to as the "Chinese Curse."
Now, in my "golden years" I again live in an interesting time. I am blessed!

Where were you on Wednesday, March 16, 1966? I was in ninth grade at Darmstadt American School in Darmstadt, Germany.
The music scene there was rather interesting. During breakfast on week days, we would listen to variety shows imported from the US over the Armed Forces Network radio station in Frankfurt. If I remember correctly, Ira Cook was the host of the morning show.
In those days, AFN played a lot of standards, as well as polkas and Hawaiian music--just about everything except rock and roll, although Jim Pewter hosted an "oldies" show on Saturday afternoon. An occasional rock hit such as the Mamas & Papas' "California Dreaming" might somehow sneak onto the playlist, but in March, 1966, it was tunes such as these that got the lion's share of the airplay:
In early June of '66,
Dominique's Discothèque by Mel Torme was proclaimed by AFN's jocks to be the number one song, and it got the most airplay on the station. I assumed that it was a huge hit Stateside, but later I found out that it didn't even come close to making the Billboard Hot 100. I wouldn't hear it again until it showed up on Youtube not long ago.
Meanwhile, one of the students at the school somehow found a copy of Jack the Ripper by Screamin' Lord Such & the Savages--probably during a trip to England--and soon everyone was singing it.

A military song came in at #1 this week in 1966. That will be my last music post for the evening. Hope you can stick around for it.

Yes I'm still in the service, I plan on doing my 20. I'm at Ft. Bliss currently. It sucks here reminds me too much of Afghanistan in the landscape. However we are located in a nice area of town, close to everything. I want to get back to Ft. Campbell though.
I recently made my E-6.
The family is doing great. Our daughter is growing up quickly already 8 months old. Her smile can brighten even the worst day.
Other than that same old stuff just another day of work. Have to work all weekend though.

Bob Crewe had made his mark in the Fifties with Silhouettes by the Rays, which he wrote and produced. Flip "Silhouettes" over!

Did Bobby Fuller commit suicide? Or was he murdered? I'm pretty sure he was murdered.

In their version of
I Fought the Law, from 1959, the Crickets' choice of a firearm was different from Bobby Fuller's.

Paul McCartney was developing a deeper sense of melody, and John Lennon was coming up with more pungent lyrics. Their music was no longer so sunny. This came in at #7.
