BACKGROUND:

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ (born December 17, 1936) is the current pope of the Roman Catholic Church, elected on March 13, 2013, and taking the regnal name of Francis I. Prior to his election, he served as an Argentine cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. He was elevated to Pope in March 2013.

Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, one of the five children of an Italian railway worker and his wife. After studying at the seminary in Villa Devoto, he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 13, 1969, by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano. He attended the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel, a seminary in San Miguel. Bergoglio attained the position of novice master there and became professor of theology.

Impressed with his leadership skills, the Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel where had had studied. He served in that capacity until 1986. He completed his doctoral dissertation in Germany and returned to his homeland to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba.

I don’t know exactly what this man stands for, but the Jesuit educational insitutions in this country are really Lefty (Notre Dame, Marquette, Georgetown etc)

Notre Dame is not Jesuit. Marquette, Georgetown, Saint Louis, Xavier, Gonzaga, Fordam, Creighton, Boston College are. Here's a complete list.

Cardinal Dolan told reporters the surprising story of how the newly elected pope decided to take the bus back to the hotel Wednesday with the rest of the cardinals instead of riding in the Holy Father’s car.

“So we take the buses over and the cardinals kind of wait outside to greet the new Holy Father as he comes back to Doma Santa Marta…and as the last bus pulls up, guess who gets off the bus? Pope Francis,” Dolan said. “So I guess he told the driver, ‘That’s OK. I’ll just go with the guys on the bus.’”

I said, "Notre Dame is not Jesuit."

I was correcting the poster that said ND was Jesuit.

Don't know why you are confused.

Peter means Rock. Just amazing how people just try to take it away. It is getting ideas from authors outside the bible instead of from the bible like some claim. The text is all there when we know without a doubt Peter’s name is rock. It is ludicrous to think otherwise.

“All of the Biblical references say that Yeshua is the Rock.”

Nope. Wrong. Again.

Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem;
Creatorem caeli et terrae.

Et in Jesum Christum,
Filium eius unicum, Dominum nostrum;
qui conceptus est
de Spiritu Sancto,
natus ex Maria virgine;
passus sub Pontio Pilato,
crucifixus, mortuus, et sepultus;
descendit ad inferos;
tertia die resurrexit a mortuis;
ascendit ad caelos;
sedet ad dexteram Dei Patris omnipotentis;
inde venturus est
iudicare vivos et mortuos.

Credo in Spiritum Sanctum;
sanctam ecclesiam catholicam;
sanctorum communionem;
remissionem peccatorum;
carnis resurrectionem;
vitam aeternam. Amen.

In English:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived
by the power of the Holy Spirit,
and born of the Virgin Mary,
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
he will come again
to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen

I think they always take a new name. The new Pope chooses his name, apparently; Pope Francis decided to take the name of St. Francis of Assisi—probably my favorite Saint, as he loved animals.

Me too. It was highly moving and emotional; a wonderful day for Christians all over the planet.

“Francis Xavier, not Francis of Assisi. Different religious orders.”

Ah, thank you for the clarification. The people on the news assumed it was Francis of Assisi, but then they mentioned the Jesuits.

I’ll have to do some studying. :)

This man seems to be incredibly humble.

Although I am not Catholic, when I watched him today, I was very impressed.

I am catholic and had never heard of him. For some reason I was very touched by his appearance today. A great first impression. Then I went to twitter and the lefties were howling. That’s when I knew for sure the Spirit was moving today.
