Rand Paul Explains His Surprise Vote For Chuck Hagel (1 of only 4 Republicans to vote for)

WASHINGTON — Kentucky Senator Rand Paul said his support for a filibuster against Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel never meant that he would vote against Hagel's confirmation.

"I voted no because I wanted more information and I think that part of what the Senate does is try to get information about the nominees," Paul told reporters in the basement of the Capitol after Hagel's confirmation Tuesday. "I've said all along that I give the president some prerogative in choosing his political appointees."

"There are many things I disagree with Chuck Hagel on, there are many things I disagree with John Kerry on, there are very few things I agree with the president on, but the president gets to choose political appointees," Paul said.

Asked if he ever got the information he wanted about Hagel, Paul said that he hadn't.

Paul implied that he might vote yes on final passage at Monday's New York Meeting.

After weeks of controversy, Hagel was confirmed by a vote of 58-41 on Tuesday.

Perhaps channeling some of his Daddy’s Jew-hatred?

I expected more from Paul.

Rand voted yes because his Dad’s libertarian anti-Israel fan club was upset. Hating Israel is a defining issue for these people.

I failed to understand his reasoning. Seemed to me Paul just makes his decision based on totally random illogic.

Yes, the president gets to pick appointees, but that doesn’t mean president IS OUR KING, and the confirmation process a rubber stamp to make it look pretty.

Huh, again????

May the price of rope rise sharply in DC very soon.
I see you’re new.
Are here to rub salt in our wounds?

I had better hopes for young Paul.
Alas, it was not to be.
If he can’t even vote correctly on something this obvious....a simple vote — not requiring any leadership ability or effort....

pray for America! pray pray pray...

(and yes, we need a new Senator next time, too!!!)

That statement from Rand Paul is less than weak tea, it is nonsensical. It makes him sound like he completely defers to Lord Obama and it will haunt him with conservatives should he have any higher office aspirations.

It’s a sad thing, I did hope he would be more consistent. I guess it’s true, Washington D.C. will eventually corrupt anyone we send there to represent us.

The lesson here is that we can never reasonably expect any one lawmaker to vote to please us 100% of the time. I might have been happier if Paul had not voted for Hagel either but the reality is it probably didn't make one bit of difference.

It is not reasonable to expect this president to have ever nominated a desirable candidate--Obama hates America.

Rand Paul’s son was arrested ny TSA for several infractions at an airport not long ago. Maybe this makes those fed charges go away.

but the president gets to choose political appointees," Paul said.

So what's the point of the review? This is an obvious cop-out.

Rand is now off my A-list. I'm on the Cruz bandwagon.
