Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop died peacefully at his home on Monday, Dartmouth College said. He was 96.
Koop served as surgeon general from 1982 to 1989, under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
He was outspoken on public health issues and did much to elevate the office of the surgeon general.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Dartmouth College, Weill Cornell Medical College and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Koop was the author of more than 200 articles and books. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 and was known for wearing bow ties, suspenders and a clipped beard.

He was the very model of the modern surgeon general.
RIP Doc Koop....
I sure hope there are cigars in Heaven.... good ones.
He operated on fetuses to correct problems, and was unable to reconcile himself to abortion, or the idea that a fetus was not a person who should be legally protected.
And after him we got Eric Clapner.
He wrote a book or two with Francis A. Schaeffer.
Whatever Happened to the Human Race, was one.
I didn’t mean my joke to say he wasn’t a great guy. On the contrary, it is a way of celebrating what a full life he lived.
He served with honor and distinction. He brought dignity to that office and made positive contributions to our nation’s health care system. RIP, Dr. Koop.
I hope it was a blended form of ETOH.
Was he really a heavy cigar smoker?
RIP to an advocate for life and fellow PCA layman.
It's now healthcentral.com. According to Wikipedia, there'd been some problems mixing paid endorsements with what was supposed to be objective information and the site went bankrupt in 2001 (when a lot of Internet start-ups did).
The interesting thing for me is that he was still well known and current in 1997 when he started the site, and today he's a figure from the distant past. I guess that's what happens when you get old.
Still, according to Wikipedia he was a widower who remarried at 94, so he must not have been totally inactive these last few years.
Hard to say, “Oh, how sad!” when a man was 96! Rest in piece, sympathies to his family and friends. My uncle knew him.
Dr. Koop performed many innovative surgeries on babies born with abdominal defects. I’m a NICU nurse and take care of a lot of babies who are now benefiting from the work of Dt. Koop.
God Bless him.
Dr. Koop was a strong pro-life Christian. He actively defended the right to life of all unborn children.
May he have the eternal reward he so richly deserves...life everlasting in the presence of God.
RIP Dr Koop
He drowned?
Ping for later
I only have fond memories of him.
I’m glad he lived so long and had such a positive impact. His replacement, the masturbater, didn’t (Elders).
Dr. Koop was a good, decent and highly intelligent man. Contrast him to that village idiot, the pro-masturbation Jocelyn “Ah like Eric Klapner” Elders who succeeded him. What a difference.
RIP. A Good and decent Man.
