WHEN a Vesuvius like John McCain tells you that you belch too much smoke and spew too much fire, you know youve got a problem.
And Ted Cruz, a Republican freshman in the Senate who has been front and center in his partys effort to squash Chuck Hagels nomination as secretary of defense, has a problem. Hes an ornery, swaggering piece of work. Just six weeks since his arrival on Capitol Hill, hes already known for his naysaying, his nit-picking and his itch to upbraid lawmakers who are vastly senior to him, who have sacrificed more than he has and who deserve a measure of respect, or at least an iota of courtesy. Courtesy isnt Cruzs métier. Grandstanding and browbeating are.
He sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and during its final meeting on Tuesday about Hagels nomination, he made such nefarious and hectoring insinuations about Hagels possible corruption by foreign influences that McCain, whod gleefully raked Hagel over the coals himself, more or less told Cruz to cool it. It was an unforgettable moment, and one that Republicans shouldnt soon forget, because Cruz, 42, isnt simply the latest overeager beaver to start gnawing his way through the halls of Congress. Hes a prime illustration of what plagues the Republican Party and holds it back.
A fascinating illustration, too. On the surface, he should be part of the solution: young, Latino, with a hardscrabble family story including his fathers imprisonment in Cuba and escape to the United States. But Republicans who look to him and see any kind of savior overlook much of what drags the party down, which isnt merely or even principally the genealogy of their candidates. Its the intransigent social conservatism, the whiff of meanness and the showy eruptions.

I am tweeting and e-mailing support every chance I get - it’s all one can do - at this point. Ted is an exceptional person and if anyone can stand strong against the folly that is Washington DC and government it is him.
The more patriots we get in the line of fire the more this obscene media has to handle. Let’s give it to them - we are in the fight for our life and we have the courage of our convictions on our side. I, myself, am looking forward to it.
And when we have to go into the trenches, I am there. G-d forgive me but I detest these marxists, statists and tyrants.
O voted for Cruz and am loving what he’s doing. I fear he’ll turn into a Beltway like Cornyn...who has been a disappointment.
Hooray for Ted Cruz, this Senator needs our total support.
Wake up Suij!
That was Rubio not Cruz.
proof that MY SENATOR Cruz is being effective!!!
GO CRUZ!!!!
.
“. . . lawmakers who . . . . . have sacrificed more than he has and . . ..”
BooHoo!! What in heck does this mean, if anything?
bump!
Now we need 50 more
“... itch to upbraid lawmakers who are vastly senior to him, who have sacrificed more than he has and who deserve a measure of respect, or at least an iota of courtesy.”.
Federal political positions were intended to be a service, not a striving.
People who think in terms of sacrifice and respect shouldn’t be in office.
It’s obvious that the NY Times hates Hispanics.
Sorry. I had not read all the posts before my knee jerked.
Sometimes I wish I were not a tea-totaler so I could at least have an excuse for my slips. :)
Of course not. Then too, there's Harry Reid the Las Vegas land swindler, Barbara Boxer who bounced almost a Million dollars in hot checks, Ted Kennedy, "The Swimmer", Ted Stephens, the swindler and bribe taker ...the list goes on and the Senate of the US in nothing to admire, respect or be proud of.
GOD SPEED, TED CRUZ!
I really don’t care what gay people do in their private lives. I don’t think they choose their sexual orientation.I really believe that they are born gay. I could support civil unions (but not marriage). But I really think their culture sucks big time. There is a large percentage of them in the media and academia who are out to destroy this country and that really makes me mad.
It wasn’t the sip of water Rubio took. It was the over-reaching/lunge for the bottle, and the awkward look of it, along with Rubio trying to keep looking at the camera.
It was an unfortunate moment which tells us Rubio is not ready for TV. Sorry - he needs some good TV coaching, and he also needs to check out his surroundings to make sure everything is in place before he speaks, even tho his people will have taken care of the details.
The speech was good; at the sipping water moment his appearance, was awkward and clumsy, -and the late-night crowd will not let him forget it.
Well said and I agree. I’ve already sent him an e-mail expressing my heartfelt thanks for a job well done. He should consider criticism by the New York Times as a badge of honor.
As far as gays are concerned. Born that way or not - I am willing to live and let live.
Just don’t try and forced me, through legal maras, to accept deviance.
That is the only rift I have with the gay lobby.
Hey, be gay! But leave me out of it.
If our government, in its great wisdom (sarcasm), wants to give gays the legal document of civil union , so be it.
But, Holy Matrimony, being a tenant of the Church, can NOT be legislated, and gays need to friggin accept that.
Since when has John McCain EVER been anything like a 'Vesuvius'? The Old Grey Lady doesn't like Ted Cruz, because he makes a lot of sense, and they're afraid folks might start listening.
Ted is the leader we have been longing for. I just love him. God has sent you to us Ted Cruz.
Awesome. I like this guy more and more.
