WASHINGTON (AP) The Republican Party's problems with minority voters have preoccupied strategists since November, and it's possible those difficulties will persist or worsen.
But an opening for marked improvements in GOP-minority relations may be at hand, or at least close by.
Republican leaders would have to make some timely decisions and get a few breaks, which campaign consultants don't rule out.
The party desperately needs to draw more support from Latinos, a fast-growing sector that gave President Barack Obama 71 percent of its vote last fall. Two big opportunities now present themselves.
If Republican lawmakers allow far-reaching immigration changes to become law, even if most of them vote against it, the nettlesome issue might fade from political headlines and perhaps ease anti-GOP feelings among Hispanics. If Republicans in 2016 nominate a Latino for president say Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida it's possible that millions of Hispanic voters would back him.

We Southerners lost the War therefore we have to be a little nicer.....LOL
Republicans will suck up to Blacks and Hispanics. They will not gain anything by doing it , but they will lose the support they have.
Who does their figuring fo them?
How often do we here the same old BS. The bottom line the average pubbie works for a living and is against food stamps, welfare, unlimited unemployment and all the other freebies.
That may be your best bet. It takes time, but it's worth it
The GOP better stop peeing off their base ....there aren’t enough Hispanics to replace them
Morons.
“That was over thirty years ago. ..”
Not much more than a mere three MONTHS ago, Romney lost millions of Republican votes. Many were focused on getting the Independent votes, and Romney GOT those Independent votes, and still LOST the election.
Sure, it doesn’t hurt to get the Hispanic (or Independent) votes, but let’s not lose sight that there are MORE votes in the base that we could lose and HAVE lost.
“All the saber-rattling hinders that, and turns off a demographic that we could win on the issues. “
I take it that ‘saber-rattling’ translates as ‘sending foreign nationals back to their own country’ or ‘enforcing the law’, something that comes in a distant second to ethnic pandering in your mind.
Why don’t they just merge with the Democrats and get it over with?
“Why dont they just merge with the Democrats and get it over with?”
They already have. Thankfully, there are a few exceptions.
We would have won the election had we put up a decent candidate. We put up the worst candidate in history of the Republican party and now we are wondering what to do next round. It is not demographics. It has to do with picking a dud like Romney who was destined to lose the minute he was chosen. Romney absolutely SUCKS bad!!!!!!! Pick a loser Republicans and he will live up to that name.
“’Saber rattling’ in this context is tough talk that nobody actually thinks could become public policy. “
Meaning that you put the demands of foreign nationals first and can’t imagine anyone actually enforcing the law.
Dwight Eisenhower had no such problem. His policy for ridding the United States of illegal aliens was Operation Wetback. The PC crowd of opportunists making up today’s GOP can’t even utter the name, much less imagine themselves deporting illegals back to their homes. What cowards.
There is core of opportunists within the GOP who put foreign nationals first, falling all over themselves in their haste to subvert American law as fast as they can. It’s a fascinating marriage of law-ignoring foreign nationals and The Stupid Party’s elites. The best part is that none of the grovelling and pandering will garner The Stupid Party the latino votes that they are whoring after.
No, “saber rattling” means cheap tough talk instead of the hard work of convincing people of the correctness of our position.
Sensible immigration reform, not to mention enforcing the laws we already have, is a reasonable position that we could sell to the country. But simplistic rhetoric and ethnic slurs play into media caricatures, turn off people on all sides of the issue and make meaningful reform all the more difficult.
Exactly; the same as they have to do with conservatives. Make the case and win their vote. If they simply lay out the case that a smaller government and the stronger economy that results from it are the best thing for themselves and their families, they'll win plenty of those voters. And that won't happen unless they go to where those voters are and talk to them.
I agree. And immediately dumping an otherwise good possible candidate because he or she doesn't adopt the 'send them all home NOW' policy is only helping liberals in their continued march toward domination in this country.
We need to remember that liberals didn't get all their favorite policies in place in one fell swoop! They worked at it, incrementally, over the past 50 years. If we demand that our candidates try to do everything we want, immediately, the will not get elected by those who listen to the MSM and are convinced that adopting those policies will put black people back in chains, and force women to stay at home and have babies. You can laugh, but we have to deal with those 'low information' voters, or I should say they have lots of information, but all the wrong kind. We can scoff at them all we want, but they will go out to vote, and we have to REACH them, somehow, before they do.
