About Obama's "skeet shooting" photo..
UK Daily Mail ^

I really couldn't care less if Obama shot skeet or not. The photo released by the White House shows that this is probably the first time this man has ever fired a shotgun, much less shot a round of skeet. However, it does show something blatantly obvious - he doesn't appear to be standing at a shooting station at the Camp David skeet range. Below is a photo from the UK Daily Mail of the Camp David skeet range. See any differences?

According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the Camp David skeet field has been completely redone . . . (that photo of Kennedy is 50 years old. Things change).
http://www.nssfblog.com/skeet-gate-some-constructive-advice-for-the-president/
(more on that in a minute) . . .
What I think happened is that Obama stopped in at the shotgun field while some guests were shooting trap. I believe it was a trap shoot because the shotgun only has one choke tube installed and trap is a singles game (while skeet involves doubles). During his brief visit, somebody asked him if he’d like to shoot. To save face, he fired a shot or two and somebody took a photo. It’s clear to me that he wasn’t shooting a round of skeet because A.) he’s wearing neither a vest nor pouch to hold 25 shells and B.) there’s no place on the skeet field where he could have been shooting that low to the horizon that there would not be a trap house in the background. I think it’s just a photo of him shooting a shotgun, nothing more, nothing less.
Now, for the NSSF blog post . . .
>>We here at NSSF were somewhat bemused over the controversy that sprang from President Obamas assertion that he shot skeet on a regular basis, and the second wave of commentary that attended the White House release of a photo to prove it. Theres a reason were citing the New York Times coverage in the link above well get to that later.
The assertion came as no surprise to us, because NSSF sponsored and oversaw the renovation of the skeet field at Camp David. We provided one of the industrys top facilities consultants, and donated tens of thousands of dollars of machinery, consulting and oversight to build the regulation field. We provided countless hours of shotgun and safety instruction as well. We were honored to provide this service for the office of the Presidency, and our investment appears to be paying off by recruiting new shooters. Welcome, Mr. President.
In the same vein, we can offer the president some constructive advice on his shooting. Mr. President, try leaning a little further forward into the shot to better manage recoil. Keep your feet about shoulder width apart, and put more weight on your leading foot. You appear to be shooting a gun with neutral cast, to wit, a straight stock. Since youre shooting left-handed, you may want to look into a different stock cast to better accommodate you. And if youre going to get a custom gun, make sure they measure your length of pull first. Proper gun fit makes an enormous difference in accuracy, and thus in your enjoyment of the sport.
You may also want to try out the semiautomatic shotguns that another one of our member companies donated to Camp David. These too come in left-handed versions, which eject the spent casing to your left, instead of to the right as is customary. No matter which way the case ejects when you shoot the semiautomatic, youll notice that the gun still only shoots one round per pull of the trigger, just like the over/under youre shooting in the picture.
In fact, the semiautomatic shotguns are functionally identical to all the semiautomatic firearms that Senator Dianne Feinstein has proposed to ban in her sweeping new legislation, S. 150. We feel like we have to keep repeating that fact, because many of the media voices that consider themselves learned scholars on gun policy dont even know the difference between a rifle and a shotgun, for heavens sake. Note that The New York Times article has a correction at the bottom of the page, because it originally said that you were shooting a rifle in the picture a mistake quickly repeated by dozens of other media outlets. Many of these same media outlets have been quick to editorialize about which guns Americans should and should not be allowed to own, when apparently they wouldnt know a rifle or a shotgun from a barn door. Go figure.
Youre wearing both eye and ear protection, which are required, but a shooting vest and some custom earplugs might make you more comfortable those earmuffs can get clammy on a hot day. Finally, a note to the photographer: Its better policy to stand directly behind the shooter on any active range, because its safer and besides, you can see (and snap, if youre quick) whether he hit the target.
Gun owners, by the way, have only a few short weeks before we see whether the Congress puts a target on our Second Amendment rights. We urge you and all our elected lawmakers to know your target, which is the criminal misuse of firearms, not arbitrary limits on which guns and magazines law-abiding citizens can legally purchase. Dont aim the gun of heavy-handed restrictions and regulations at anything youre not willing to destroy, including the hundreds of thousands of jobs our industry provides. Did you know that new restrictions on gun and ammunition purchases will also damage wildlife conservation programs? Thats because our nations federal conservation grants are funded primarily by the excise taxes on gun and ammo sales.
So the outcome of this pending legislative debate is very important. And believe me, were watching that even more closely than the pictures of you shooting a shotgun at Camp David.<<

Whether the Camp David skeet range has been redone or not, there are no artifacts of a skeet range in Obama’s picture.

This is such a distraction. And everybody’s falling for it.
Who gives a shit if nobama has shot a shotgun. What difference does it make (to turn a phrase)?
I’m MUCH more worried about his destroying our precious country.
This is like his birth certificate that was posted on the WH web site. Everybody went nuts. Meanwhile the prick is dismantling our country a piece at a time. Bastard!

Good points. Thanks for the great explanation. I’ve only shot trap, and as much as I enjoy mocking “The One” I like to keep it real.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation [NSSF], strangely enough, headquartered in Newtown, Connecticut, a gun industry trade group that renovated the range at Camp David.
**NSSF provided consultants and donated tens of thousands of dollars of machinery and oversight to build the field to regulation standards, and provide shotgun safety instruction. The work was done at the request of the George W. Bush administration.**
Man, did *that* project ever turn around to bite them!

It might be shopped, but they would have been smart enough to make it authentic. He is at the number eight position and the camera is slightly behind that position. So the view is of a background that is in front of the towers and fence.

That’s right. And in the photo of Bronco Bama shooting, the smoke is coming out while the gun is still horizontal.

What I found unusual about the skeet shooting photo was his wristwatch.
There is a news story on 8-4-2012 about him spending his birthday playing golf for six hours then heading to Camp David in the evening (with his chef) to rest for the remaining part of the weekend.
There is a photo of him boarding the helicopter at the White House. He is dressed in tan pants, white shirt, and a black face watch.
At Camp David, skeet shooting, he is dressed in jeans, black Nike shirt, and white face watch. This watch looks like the one in the photo of him by the pool with a water gun at Camp David in June 2011.
Flying over to Camp David after six hours of golf, changing clothes AND WATCH, to go shooting before dinner seems odd to me.

See any differences? There are men holding shot guns in the photos from the 1960s
I notice in the picture of Obama firing a shotgun that the shotgun barrel appears to be ported in an unusual fashion. Note the plum of powder smoke back a way from the muzzle.
The porting seems to be further back on the barrel than I have seen before. It also looks like the port exhaust a bit to the right of the barrel.
Does anyone else find this a bit unusual?
