Smoke going straight out the barrel is normal, but what the heck is that second smoke stream shooting behind and away from the barrel? Perhaps some sort of release value to diminish the recoil from the shot but I've never seen that on a range.

If you look at a good quality pic of this and make it big enough you can see the porting on the barrel. The odd thing is there is no smoke coming out of any of the porting on the near side. Also odd is that there appears to be a number of ports on the near side but only one stream of smoke coming out the other side. Wouldn't both sides of the barrel have an equal number of porting holes?
