The Obama administration proposed regulations Friday that would prohibit U.S. schools from selling unhealthy snacks.
The 160-page regulation from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) would enact nutrition standards for "competitive" foods not included in the official school meal.
In practice, the proposed rules would replace traditional potato chips with baked versions and candy with granola. Regular soda is out, though high-schoolers may have access to diet versions.
"Although nutrition standards for foods sold at school alone may not be a determining factor in children's overall diets, they are critical to providing children with healthy food options throughout the entire school day," the proposed rule states.
"Thus, these standards will help to ensure that the school nutrition environment does all that it can to promote healthy choice, and help to prevent diet-related health problems."

I may be showing my age, but I never understood why schools allowed soda and candy to be sold as snacks in school. When I was in school, you couldn’t buy snacks period. And there was no soda with meals or anywhere else on school property (other than at parties).
“More kids smuggling black market snacks to schools....”
I agree. Looks to me like a business opportunity for enterprising young capitalists!
We had snack machines in our school, and I’m getting up there age wise.
Trouble for the snack vendors....few could afford to buy them....
Yep, you get a call...come on down to the school. Your son, Larry, has been caught with 40 x ding dongs in his bag....selling them for 20-cents profit for each one he sells ($8 a day). Larry admits it’s all true, and he’s been selling condoms to the 14 year old guys for $4 each, and racked up a savings account of $7k over one year. The USDA guys don’t care about the condoms....but that din dong black market is something truly evil. Meanwhile, you ask Larry if he could tote a second back-pack to school and sell Ho-Ho’s, to give you a cut of fifty percent of the profit.
Very well illustrated....
This is stupid.
When I was a kid in the 60’s the school STORE had candy and a soda machine in the hallway........
No more Ding-Dongs.....Hostess, remember?........
My local district installed the machines because the students used to sneak out of school, go to the corner market and buy the stuff...when they were supposed to be in class. The district tried to get the markets to stop selling to students during school hours, but failed.
Until all fun and enjoyment is sucked out of life, the liberals will not be happy.
Unless I’m mistaken, the school boards allowed, with the permission of the taxpayers in the district, snacks and soda to be sold in the schools in exchange for contributions from the snack and soda manufactures and suppliers, thereby keeping tax rates for schools lower. This is how it should be.
Socialism springs from the fountain of narcissim, a belief from somebody somewhere that he is much smarter than everybody everywhere else. Of course, when it never works, it is everybodys fault but the dictator.
