Washington (CNN) -- The Pentagon has begun laying off 46,000 contract and temporary civilian employees in an effort to cut back on military spending, the No. 2 Pentagon official said on Friday. Full time civilian employees, which number in the hundreds of thousands, also will be furloughed for one day a week for 22 weeks, Deputy Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in an interview with wire service reporters. His comments were confirmed by a Pentagon spokesman.

Not by a long shot.
The scumbags want everybody laid off so that they must turn to government for the "help" and "free stuff" Democrat politicians are only too happy to hand out in exchange for votes.
The moochers outnumber the producers, the parasites outnumber the hosts.
America is dead. The Democrats have won.
Hunker down, hide and protect what you have, and take care of your family. Learn from the Democrat party base how to game the system, and grab whatever you can from government before the parasites gobble it all up. I understand SSDI is a popular and easy scam these days. You haven't "twisted your back" lately, have you? Of course, I think you can get on the SSDI gravy train just by being an alcoholic or a junkie. Or even just by being "depressed"! Anyway, good luck.
We had a friend (notice I said had) whose wife became a citizen ONLY because she could get social security even though she had never worked here for even one day. She actually got more than my mom whod worked for most of her life. Somethings not right.

No, it’s not. And these folks ALSO receive Medicare and/or Medicaid. Medicaid for sure ...but as an RN, I was shocked to see that many of them are also on the Medicare roles ...esp the elderly folks, those who immigrated here wtihin the past 10 years or so. Somehow they just jump on the bandwagon and no one questions how long they’ve actually paid into the system — or, if ever.
And we wonder why entitlement spending is out of control. Nobody talks about this.
Frankly, they give more value to the country for their time then most of the lard asses which infest the other agencies.
How about cutting EBT cards 20% for the slugs and parasites who never show up for any meaningful work? Maybe we can do the same for ALL government employees while we're at it.
There are plenty of places to cut besides the DOD.
Thanks FreeAtlanta.
Nothing is going to help traffic in DC except a complete firing of those in charge of it and bringing in people who actually know something about traffic administration and control.
Also a great need for a well trained Traffic Division whose main job is to manage the “speedy and efficient” flow of traffic (from my old course on “Traffic Patrol and Administration” in the 1970’s).
Traffic signs are a disaster, one of the key chokepoints in people getting around by car. Blame the Dept. of the Interior for that along G.W. Parkway heading towards Rosslyn. You have less than one second to find the correct sign to split off to Rosslyn but the sign is small, brown background with white letters which disappear in bad weather. Some jerk actually got paid to do that.
Re Defense contractors and parttimers. I know liberal civilians at DOD and some conservatives. That is not the problem. These guys work, I’ll say that.
It is crackpot DOD policies that cost us billions in wasted dreams (Pick a fighter-plane, please). We produce a couple dozen fighters at $35 million of more per plane while Red China turns out a good fighter at a quarter or less of that cost. We make 60, they might 600. Guess who’s gonna win in a dogfight or swarm attack? The same for ships.
Our military leadership at JCS/DOD stinks, the worst I’ve seen since the Carter Administration. At least the guys I knew in Nam were fighting to win, not for a draw or withdrawal.
There are great problems within the DOD legal sections regarding Rules of Engagement, the problems of pregnancy, esp. in the Navy, and double payments to plaintiffs for environmental CERCLA cleanups (I’d say probably hitting over $1 Billion in recent years).
If any place needs a RIF, it is in the Defense establishment, esp. the planners and Politically Correct fools.
PS: I work with some of the better military people. They often have to follow halfassed policies. Not their fault, and even they talk about the problems from above.
I expect to be one of those furloughed for 22 days over the next 22 weeks. Will tighten things up, but will also allow me to “test” what retirement will feel like as I spend the day with my wife who will retire soon...It will be interesting to see how this works - our area is pretty much a mad house each day and I have been working (voluntarily) about 12 extra hours a week to make ends meet. Won’t do that any more, so things are likely to start eroding.
Makes me feel bad for the military who will be asked to take up the slack - our area is about 60/40 military/civilian and there's lots going on - bound to destroy the last vestiges of morale. Since we've been undermanned to boot, we will be braking a number of rules about how many instructors are available - going to be paperwork nightmare for the commander to sign all the individual waivers.
That was a different era, there were large quantities of excess food purchased to maintain prices.
Do those excesses still exist? Did food stamps come on line as the excesses diminished?
Lastly, aren’t excess foods packed off to Africa or somewhere? US AID gives it away. Perhaps there is not enough to distribute here so it is shipped to Africa
———will also allow me to “test” what retirement will feel like——
Perhaps, but there is not really enough time. Hopefully you will learn that you can get out of the rut and do whatever you want.
The problem becomes what do I want to do?
Good luck to you during the coming change
Yeah, but the important thing is, Big Bird is safe.
The whole idea is to defund the right (deprive them of tax dollars while the left gets gets more and more tax dollars in such BS operations as 0bama-Care, welfare, food stamps, ObamaFones, the EEOC and Department of Education) and steal (via taxes) from the right. And the right skews heavily to being older white men in the productive private sector
I agree. But... I just finished working on a defense contract, and two of the three former-military co-workers were liberals.
I know.
We’ve been feeling this already. Nothing officially announced regarding furloughs, but this quote in the open press may mean it’s a done deal.
Unpaid time off.
Don’t lose too much sleep over DOD civilian employees. Before any given election you will find @ 2:1 D:R bumper stickers in the Pentagon parking log.
The military and DOD civilian workforce is not an Obama constituency. So, the “Divider and Chief” will punish this group along with anyone else who did not support him in the last election.
I really despise the division of our country that is taking place. Sure, the military has fat that can be cut, but of all the functions of governments, defense of the nation is the top responsibility. So, I would be more amenable to cuts in Defense if lesser functions of government were cut first. That is not going to happen because the people who perform these lesser functions of government support Obama and the democrats and constitute a larger number of votes.
That is not true. I have known many DOD civilian employees. Most are former military and most do not support the “Obamanable Showman”.
Well, since you don’t believe me, when 2016 rolls around, take a run thru the Pentagon parking lot.
Who each of us knows individually is anecdotal. I also know personally lots of former military who work for DOD, but that doesn’t mean I know even 1% of Pentagon employees.
Not that I don’t believe you...It’s just not my personal experience. Truth be told, I only visited the Penatagon twice while I was in the military. I do know that in my rather large circle of friends who include both active duty military and DOD civilian workers, the political breakdown is decidedly anti-Obama. I suspect many of the bumper stickers you saw are from local DC-area hires, many for clerical and lower level positions. DC being 90%+ democrat, that does not surprise me. Outside of DC., there is a very large DOD workforce at all military bases. I can assure you, anecdotally speaking, these people are largely not fans of Obama.
I know that the dems are trying to change the military and the civilian workforce more to their liking, but they have a long way to go before that happens.
“... they have a long way to go before that happens.”
I pray you’re right! But look at the top brass. No one is going to be promoted to flag rank without being “pliable’ to PC thinking. That doesn’t bode well. Maybe the country will wake up sooner rather than later.
BTW: While the low level clerical help is almost assuredly D and even more pro-Obama personally, those folks generally ride the Metro (that stops right at the Pentagon).
