The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), which made the discovery, said the burgers were produced by two processing plants in Ireland, Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods, and Dalepak Hambleton in the UK.
In nine of the 10 burger samples from the four retailers, and from the Irish chain Dunnes Stores, horse DNA was found at very low levels. However, in one sample, from Tesco, the level of positive DNA indicated horsemeat accounted for 29% relative to the beef content.

We farm and own horses.
Yep, a lot of people don’t calculate that it costs a certain amount to buy the horse but then, it keeps eating whether it gets ridden or not.
Horse slaughter plants serve a sad purpose. Some horses just don’t have a future. I would rather they ride a few hours to a well-regulated US plant rather than get trucked for days out of the country.
This should silence the neigh-sayers.
Horses for courses . . . like the appetizer, the entree, maybe even the soup.
it’s different when you raise them. they have a face and they look at you.
it’s why i am grateful that other people are butchers. if i had to do it my diet would be inverted, probably. i couldn’t go veggie but it’d be a lot less meat.
i would think a great upside, not that i advocae for it, would be horses are fed a better diet and require a lot less antibiotics to deal with problems, than average feedlot cattle do.
Is a Wookie the same as a Sasquatch? Or just ‘cousins’? Just wondering how Her Lardass-Wookieness fits into the DNA chain.
We say the cows go to “freezer camp”.

You need to come out to Nevada and see for yourself the wild horses. The idea is great but because of the size of the herds it is not uncommon to see some that are damn close to starving. If the folks who support this idea would see for themselves the full picture they would agree the answer is to slaughter half of the herds.
There’s too many horses for land space available. In dry years these horses aren’t living the good life. BLM does a real crappy job at taking care of them. There’s not enough people willing to buy a wild mustang and feed it. People can’t sell a horse in my area because there’s no buyers. The horse ends up being turned loose to feed on its own.
“Does it taste good?”
Indeed it does. I’ve had it several times in Russia, and it is better than beef, in my opinion. It is finer grained than beef, kind of in between beef and venison, and a little bit sweet.
Remember the mane!
Thanks B4Ranch.
:)
Nope. My boys are all adults and have run as far away from Farm Life as humanly possible.
Idiots. ;)
This is MY first go-round with home-grown beef, so I’m wondering how *I* will react when the time comes. I’m made of pretty tough stuff, but sometimes my human side overtakes my cyborg side, LOL!
LOL! No, I just got splashed as I stood beside him; he wasn’t really ‘aiming’ for me!
Sorry. I’ve only BEEN a Farm Girl for 20 years now; I’m not an OLD cow-hand like you! I’m still learning the ropes. :)
Who thought to eat the first lobster OYSTER, I wonder?
I love 'em. Saltier is better, but who picked one up and said, "ummmmm, looks good to eat"?
Or big old snails, or clams or soft-shell crabs?
Obviously, I’ve been land-locked my entire life, LOL!
Chocolate-covered grasshoppers? Maybe...
