Official Washington hailed the deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff as a significant bipartisan accomplishment. However, voters around the country viewed the deal in very partisan terms: Seven out of 10 Democrats approved of it, while seven...of 10 Republicans disapproved.
Just a few days after reaching that agreement, an inside-the-Beltway publication reported another area of bipartisan agreement...while Washington Democrats have always viewed GOP voters as a problem, Washington Republicans "in many a post-election soul-searching session" have come to agree. More precisely, the article said the party's Election 2012 failures have "brought forth one principal conclusion from establishment Republicans: They have a primary problem."
As seen from the halls of power, the problem is that Republican voters think it's OK to replace incumbent senators and congressman who don't represent the views of their constituents. In 2012, for example, Republican voters in Indiana dumped longtime Sen. Richard Lugar in a primary battle.
This infuriated establishment Republicans for two reasons. First, because they liked Lugar and the way he worked. Second, because the replacement candidate was flawed and allowed Democrats to win what should have been a safe Republican seat.
So, according to Politico, the Washington team is gearing up a new effort to protect incumbents and limit the ability of Republican voters to successfully challenge establishment candidates.
That makes sense to those whose sole goal is winning a majority in Congress rather than changing the course of government policy. Seen from the outside, though, it sounds like the professional politicians are saying that the only way to win is to pick more candidates like the insiders. Hearing that message, the reaction of many Republican and conservative voters is, "Why bother?"
That's why more than two-thirds of Republican voters believe GOP officials in Washington have lost touch with the party's base.

Further evidence that this nation is being run by two criminal organizations...the Republican and Democratic parties.
I think their internal polls tell them that enough people will stay. We are sadly, a minority; most of their supporters are the GOP equivalent of low-information voters.
Zero sympathy. Plenty of folks had their traps shut when Dubya was enacting liberal policies. Seems a bit “johnny come lately” that, when a D is in the White House supporting those very same policies - hello amnesty -, a stink is finally raised.
The GOP is dead. People like Karl Rove killed it.
Sarah Palin now leads a Third Party whether she knows it or not.
Absolutely. Hence my tagline.
The other two state Reps (R's) voted against.
I sent my Rep a scathing email and pointed out that he may face the issue in 2014.
He sent a reply (boilerplated, I'm sure) about how desperate Washington was about avoiding the fiscal cliff, yada yada yada. And that was why HE voted for it.
My wife and I are independents. I've not voted for a Democrat in 40 years, and my campaign contributions have always gone exclusively to the GOP (they are now stopping) but I'm an independent.
"In 1835, under President Andrew Jackson, the US Federal Budget was balanced and the National Debt was paid in full. This has never happened since."
Andrew Jackson was a Democrat, so there is always hope!
Unfortunately you and your wife will be unable to help us elect conservatives in the primary. You have just helped to hand over the country to the GOPe
as Goober used to say................”well gaahhh......LEE!!!!
you nailed it best!!
Wonder when and IF ALL conservatives will “get it?”
Who would lead such a party? I say DeMint is the only viable candidate for such a position. I would say Cruz but he has a birther issue, I think? Then, whoever came out on top would need to keep Repulican(e’s) OUT in order to not dilute a new third party’s effectiveness.
Another I would darn sure vote for would be West! Hmmm.......a Demint/West ticket, or visa versa! Think I would have died and gone to heaven to ever see that!
Unfortunately the majority of the “Republican establishment”, that includes most of the elected Republican US Senators and quite a few of the Republican US House members, would love to stay in the minority but keep their sinecures. Then we have idiots like Karl Rove ...
I think more and more that you might be right. The Bush family did damage to the image of the republican party that it might never fully recover from.
Conservatives in New Jersey? Gimme a break.
What silly nonsense.
The GOP establishment is on the verge of being taken over by conservatives and everyone here wants to get mad and leave!
Stupid. Cowardly.
GWB and crew killed off the GOP.
Did you read the article?
Understood, Timber.
Let ‘em try.
What they want to do, from my reading of the Politico article, is to throw lots of money behind their best GOP-e champions. Seriously?
If the people are furious enough to “primary out” long-time GOP elites — and we surely are — then they are insane to try and stop it. Money that would be better spent exposing the Social Democrats and their corruption will instead be used to coddle someone that the GOP base despises? This while Tea Party and conservative candidates are rejected and discouraged? Ridiculous.
The Stupid Party indeed. Time for more and bigger changes in the GOP.
The biased MSM has so poisoned the Bush brand that many independents probably wouldn’t vote for Jebbie. But just wait another two years and see the NYT, LA times, WaPo, ABCCBSNBCCNN and PMSNBC spout the mantra that Jebbie would be the only Republican who could win—just like they did with McVain and Mitt.
Yeah, I read it the first couple times it was posted too.
I don’t think our commenters have read it. LOL!
The reason the establishment is doing this to defend itself is because we’re taking over. Yeah: WE’RE WINNING!
Of course, some commenters may not think it’s good for conservatives to take over the GOP. They’d rather run away from the fighr.
Declare war on DC, start a new party larger in size than the GOP for real Americans, and recruit candidates who will go to DC not to reform or solve problems but to destroy the federal apparatus.
It's time to start calling out the rabid baby killers, trade unionists, sex perverts, trial lawyers, communists , race baiters, lobbyists , apparatchiks, propagandists in the press, gun grabbers, and imbeciles that pollute DC and the State Capitols and their supporters that live amongst us for what they are, disgusting degenerate evil parasites that must be stopped.
Eliminate tax withholding, no new hiring of federal employees, rotate the Capital amongst the states and if necessary break up the Republic and form new nations on this continent.
