Despite the Roland Emmerich film, I wasn't too worried about the Mayan End-of-the-World scenario, predicted for Dec. 21, 2012. I confess it was an occasional topic of conversation around my home. However, my five children all enjoyed the film, and more than one of them asked me what I thought about the possibility. My answer was always the same:
"If the world does end, I'm glad we're going out with Notre Dame ranked No. 1 in college football. Because that's the way it's supposed to be."
At my answer, my childrenranging in age from 10 to 21simply rolled their eyes. As would, no doubt, fans of Alabama, Michigan, USC, Miami, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Nebraska, Texas, Florida or any other team with a long tradition of football excellence that regularly aspires to be No. 1.
I get that others might feel differently. Growing up, even I wasn't a fan of Notre Dame. I was born in Omaha, and with uncles who'd attended Nebraska, I still retain a fondness for the Cornhuskers. Furthermore, because my father received his doctorate from USCand though I know these are fighting words to my fellow ND alumniI root for the Trojans as well. In fact, I wasn't a fan of Notre Dame football even when I first arrived in South Bend in the fall of 1984. I'm pretty sure I was the only freshman on my dormitory floor who opted not to buy football tickets; I used those quiet Saturday afternoons as a chance to catch up on my studies.

Condi Rice graduated Notre Dame... GO IRISH... the football team had nothing to do with Fr. Jenkins politics
Go, Crimson Tide! No, Irish!
As a Navy alum and a Southerner, I say: “Crush the Mick Mackerel Snappers!”

That said, the place is still very Catholic. Don't tell me you know one way or the other unless you have gone there or have a son, daughter, relative or friend that attends. At the same time, there are factions that push to get their way in making the place more and more secular. It is a battle that rages, but the kids who attend are generally pretty decent, religious kids. Flame away.
Oh and Go Irish
I'm a fan of Occidental College and USC, from which I hold degrees, and of Cincinnati, from which I hold one unit. By the way, I'm also a cat person.
Wow!!!
Nothing like man-boobs to get your evening off to a good start(I know I have some tequila here somewhere).

A double post, how special.
The ESPN-Notre Dame network is in overtime to pull off a ND win. Everything on ESPN is pro-Notre Dame. The writers and all are rooting for ND to win to stop the SEC. Notre Dame against the world. I don’t think so. It is the nation versus the SEC and Alabama in particular. Roll Tide.
I know that many Notre Dame folks were heartsick when Obama was honored. Unfortunately, those folks lost that battle, which alone is an indication of how insidiously evil works. I watched a lovely young couple — seniors at ND, who were engaged to be married after graduation — appear on the Today Show and speak earnestly and thoughtfully about their pro-life work and how wrong it was of their school to honor Obama. When students such as these, who are fighting for what Notre Dame purports to believe, are overruled in favor of Obama, something has gone very wrong at the school so many people love.
Notre Dame the institution — not some people at ND and not Jenkins himself — gave an honorary degree to Obama, and the university as an institution has not repented of that. Until it does so, I say, “Go, Crimson Tide”!
