At this point the only reason that I can believe is that some portion of them actually agree with him (and more than enough others are too afraid to buck the establishment). Really can't understand it any other way at this point.

There’s not that much technology in the base platform. They don’t get the 120mm gun or, more importantly, the advanced armor. I believe these “monkey models” get the basic, cold-rolled steel plate and not the ceramic-composite Chobham armor of the American M1A2 versions.
That, and the fact that Egypt is incapable of maintaining the Abrams without US contractor and parts support. Same lesson we learned with Iran, where aircraft were rendered helpless immediately or within just a few months without US logistics support.
