Johannesburg - A white girl representing South Africa was the most jarring thing for some beauty pageant watchers to witness this week.
When the blue-eyed former Miss SA Melinda Bam took to the Miss Universe stage at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, she triggered a social media buzz.
Her appearance sparked an avalanche of tweets, mostly from American viewers during the pageant, which was streamed live online at 03:00 local time.

I have a friend who was johannessburg. When she became a US citizen we threw party for her and a friend toasting her asked “How does it feel to be an African American?”.

Nope. Black Africans make up at least 75% of the population while Afrikaners (descended from Dutch Settlers in the Cape Colony) is now 10% or so.

You’re forgetting that there’s many ethnic groups in South Africa including Africans, Coloreds, Afrikaners, Indians and Chinese.

She definitely has the beauty and body to represent South Africa in the pageant. Wow, I don’t know what her talents are but the bikini segment should make up for any shortcomings.

Melinda Bam is white because she is an Afrikaner, or Dutch-African (although German and French South Africans are also Afrikaners). The Dutch began arriving in South Africa in the 16th century, soon after blacks began arriving in the U.S. They are as African as blacks are American.
Because she advanced in the Miss Universe contest, she will not represent her country in the Miss World contest. Her first princess, Remona Moodley, an Indian South Africa, will be the country’s representative.
Her second princess, Thuli Sangweni, is a black South African. She also was named Miss Congeniality.
I think it’s more basic than that. I think there are a lot of Americans of a generation younger than mine who grew up never knowing about the colonial history of South Africa, and have no idea that a significant minority of the population there is white.

My daughter’s college biology professor was white as was her entire family. They were all from South Africa.
Nothing wrong with you... you find it pretty because it's good engineering. I don't know why, but with planes and boats it seems that the best designs also happen to be the prettiest.
Ask a boatbuilder for his definition of the word "fair" sometime... but don't ask if you don't have an hour to sit and listen, because the answer is tied up in some combination of "graceful" and "efficient" that only God and finite element analysis can understand.
