The next time a politician suggests British-style regulations in the US, they should know about this.
Also, should CNN grant "equal time" by publicizing this fact?
But, of course, no J-school will do such thing -- because Piers was performing his proper function: shilling for Big Government.
UK moving towards ban of sharp, pointy chef knives. A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase - and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings.
They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon.
The research is published in the British Medical Journal. The researchers said there was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.
They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen. None of the chefs felt such knives were essential, since the point of a short blade was just as useful when a sharp end was needed.
The researchers said a short pointed knife may cause a substantial superficial wound if used in an assault - but is unlikely to penetrate to inner organs.
Impossible. Great Britain has banned guns. Just like Chicago.
That bit of news should make Piers cry in his pork pie.
Dam is this correct? Because reading this over not just the UK but all of gun control Europe is FAR MORE VIOLENCE then the “gun crazy” US
That story is from 2009. Got any updates from 2010/2011?
The “crime rate” in the US is often extrapolated from the murder rate, which is indeed much higher than in most Western countries.
But as you point out here, violence is more than murder.
The results are not necessarily apples to apples, as jurisdictions define and categorize crimes differently. That’s the advantage of murder as a category, the guy’s either dead or he isn’t.
I wish I could remember where I saw it, but it was about five years ago. It pointed out that 20 years earlier, which would have been near the peak of the US crime wave, a person was 8x more likely to be mugged in London than NYC. But at the time of the writing, UK crime had jumped a bunch, and NYC crime was way down. You were then 8x more likely to be mugged in London than NYC.
But we still got ‘em beat in murder.
The dirty secret about murder is that it substantially “red on red” with scum killing scum at no net loss to society.
Also, law-abiding gun owners dispose of a fair number of street goblins, too.
The dirty little secret is that if you remove the cities with corrupt politicians, their large welfare populations and harsh gun control laws the crime rate in the U.S. is far below that of Britain and Europe.
Another dirty little secret no one will talk about. The crime rate for Americans of European descent is far lower than any comparable country in Europe.
Most of America has crime rates far below Europe with their socialist economies and harsh gun control.
Since that article was from 2009, do you have any statistics that are current?
From the article:
“More than 20 people a day were taken to hospital accident and emergency departments in England last year after being hit, kicked, scratched or bitten.” (population of England is about 53 Million)

England has 6 times the population of NYC and 1/3 the chance of “being hit, kicked, scratched or bitten vs murdered or feloniously assaulted in NYC.
Newsflash: British politicians disarm lawabiding subjects to make it easier for the criminals to apply thier trade.
Researchers admit that comparisons of crime data between countries must be viewed with caution because of differing criminal justice systems and how crimes are reported and measured.
From the Telegraph:
Violent inner-city crime, the figures, and a question of race
26 Jun 2010
-snip-
The data provide a breakdown of the ethnicity of the 18,091 men and boys who police took action against for a range of violent and sexual offences in London in 2009-10.
They show that among those proceeded against for street crimes, 54 per cent were black; for robbery, 59 per cent; and for gun crimes, 67 per cent. Street crimes include muggings, assault with intent to rob and snatching property. Just over 12 per cent of Londons 7.5 million population is black, including those of mixed black and white parentage, while 69 per cent is white, according to the Office for National Statistics.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7856787/Violent-inner-city- crime-the-figures-and-a-question-of-race.html
The US has over triple the murder rate of the UK. Their black population is only 1.8%, so that should be a tip-off about these stats.
I don’t see any reference to Britain’s ongoing demographic transition into an Islamic country. I would expect that to bring up crime rates a lot, at least until judicial power is handed off to the Muslims, when they then can impose Sharia - which has a way of dealing with crime that is quite effective.
Drugs, pub culture and lack of Christian values.
It’s 1968 all over again.
Back then, after the murder of Bobby Kennedy, I picked up a copy of PUNCH. One of the cartoons showed two Englishmen walking down the street. They see a newspaper telling of the murder of Bobby Kennedy. One Englishman says to the other....”MY GOD! What is going on over there!”
They are both oblivious to the shadow of English crime stalking them.
It’s shocking how our media (I’m a Brit) think they are soooo superior to America.......the sheer arrogance of them, foaming at the mouth at the prospect of ‘them crazy red necks’ losing their guns is sickening.....
It’s also important to note the big difference between the *resolution* of violent crimes in the UK vs. the US.
That is, in the UK, violent criminals are far more likely to get away with it, than in the US.
For example, if a violent criminal robs a liquor store in Britain, he will likely walk away with loot. In the US, he gets shot up, and dies on the floor. But in both instances, a “violent crime” is recorded, as if they were equal.
B-b-b-but they have gun control! Doesn’t it stop all crime? My world is shattered./s
The article states: “...Alcohol is blamed as a factor in half of the incidents...”
England and Wales have the world’s highest level of drinking and drunkenness, as I recall, which is difficult to combat in spite of several educations programs devoted to teaching people sane alcohol policies and practices. They are attempting to raise taxes on booze, close grog shops earlier, etc
