ABC News: ‘Unlikely’ Assault Weapons Ban Would Have Stopped Sandy Hook

Today, ABC News finally reported the blindingly obvious fact that Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s beloved assault weapons ban – a piece of legislation now favored by President Obama – would not have prevented the Sandy Hook shootings. Here’s what they said:

Could a Ban Have Prevented the Connecticut Shootings?

It's impossible to say for sure, but it seems unlikely that if the law were still in place, as it was written, it could have done much to prevent Friday's tragedy. Lanza's primary weapon, the Bushmaster .223 rifle, is a type of AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, certain models of which were prohibited from being sold under the ban, but the Bushmaster model used by Lanza was not on that list.

Additionally, the language in the law was loose enough that a gun enthusiast who was interested in adding a type of AR-15 to their collection could have purchased one legally.

In fact, ABC News even admitted that the assault weapons ban passed by Congress in 1994 didn’t work in the first place:

Thanks a lot, pal. That doesn’t do those of us who live in Illinois, behind enemy lines, any good.

Better that Obama turns the entire country into New York City?

... also the key thing our side must do is slow down the process. Obama wants to seize the hysteria and momentum and ram something through. Slow it down to take months or maybe years and let them talk themselves to death and burn out.

I seem to remember that the early reports stated that the AR was found in the back seat of the car, implying that it was never used. What’s the story with that?

I was under the impression that the Bushmaster was in the trunk of the shooters car, now it is the weapon used. Does anyone know when they changed the story? Was it the actual weapon used or has it become the weapon to justify the ban on assault guns?

So far I've seen nothing confirming that the Bushmaster was even carried into the school, it's variously been "in the trunk of his car", "also taken", or similar; did I miss something critical to this debate?

Are you drunk?

No, I haven't had as much to drink as you, obviously!

Stop making stupidass comments and answer the question, if the guy had a knife how many would have died?

It’s my understanding that the rifle used in the mass shootings in CT was legal under the state’s gun ban law.

No way of knowing. How many people did McVeigh kill?

How many did 19 muslims kill with box cutters?

What is a liberal gungrabber doing here?

Lay off the pot as it makes you stupid boy.

M-16s and AK-47s are assault weapons.

An AR15 is not.

There isn’t one army in the world that would even consider using it. There isn’t a police department in the entire nation that uses it.

It fires only one round at a time. The round is lethal, of course, but so is a .22 pistol when the target is a 5 year old.

I believe in arming the right teachers. Like having air marshalls on board planes.

The USA is about 38 times larger than Israel in population. However in that poster it has about a 40 to 1 murder rate when compared to Israel. The USA’s murder ratio in their schools are slightly higher than their population ratio of Israels. Therefore despite Israel arming its teachers with military assualt rifles. Its school murders is comparable to the USA.

This could make it a hard sell. Obviously it is a matter of culture and necessity.

Gun bans do not prevent crimes, they prevent citizens from defending themselves.

CT is one of those states that have "sane and reasonable" laws as a "reasonable first start". While they never promised in writing that crimes like this would be impossible in CT, it was strongly implied, and applauded.

So if CT is so far along, and already took that "first step", what is their their "sane and reasonable" second step? Can they provide measurable metrics that we can use to evaluate their success? If they have third and fourth steps ready, why not announce and implement them now, rather than endangering innocent people by holding back?

A crisis occurs. It can't be allowed to go to waste, so roll out all the old, tired, and phony buzzwords, pretend they're brilliant new ideas, and hope nobody looks back at the previous example of them dancing on the bodies of innocent people.

A friend of mine owns a gun shop and is a gunsmith - so he has a lot of metal working tools. He also sells guns with the “bullet button” on them.

We were talking about the “bullet button” the other night and went to his shop where he fashioned a “bullet button extractor” in about an hour.

It clips to the rifle, is spring-loaded, and can be operated with one finger. When you want to change the clip, you pull the slide with one finger while holding the mag in order to release the mag, and then release the slide [the spring returns it to the original position.

If you have guerilla-taped the mag, you then flip it over and snap the new one into place.

Takes about 1/2 second longer than with a non bullet-buttoned gun [we tested it].

Basically no difference - costs about $15 in parts and an hour to make ...

More then 20 children could have been killed with a machete type knife at this very same school on this very same day. And no one would have had the ability to stop him until the police showed up. I'm also sick of hearing how a security guard could have prevented all of this. No, if you have one security guard he becomes target number one. Also, the shooter broke a window to get in, a “buzzer and sign in” system isn't going to stop anything, yet our local schools continue to do this and think all is fine. The day after the murders my husband brought my daughters sneakers to school, she had forgotten them. She's at a new school this year. He did not know the secretary that let him in, pushed the buzzer and said I have sneakers for so and so. Door pops open. Of course two feet away was the life size fire classroom escape window, not hard to get in and banning one type of gun will stop nothing.

Probably. The left isn't known for innovation, once they got to the kill the independent farmers stage about 100 years ago.
