I've been a gun owner since the age of 10.
My parents bought me a Ruger .22-caliber rifle for my birthday, and my dad and I went shooting with it often, at a company shooting range tucked away in the sandy scrub palms behind his job in Orlando, Fla. He was an executive and traveled frequently, sometimes for a month at a time. Around this time, my mom got some threatening phone calls,

I haven't fired (or even seen) my guns — the Ruger .22 and my West Point class pistol, a .45 — in years. Gun ownership sometimes settles into a lazy inertia; they're in my parents' house, out of sight and (except at times like this) out of mind. I have no particular urge to take them to the shooting range — no desire to do anything with them, in fact, but leave them where they are.
