Asylums might need to be brought back.

Asylum Street in Hartford, the capital of the state of Connecticut, was named for the state mental asylum that had been located there. When the asylum was closed, the buildings of the asylum became state office buildings. I guess the asylum never really closed.

“A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books.”

It is my strongly held belief that underlying all childhood rage is humiliation, and quite often that humiliation comes directly from the parents. I'm not making excuses for Lanza, but I cannot assume his mother was a wonderful parent that just happened to have a child who was destined from birth to be a sociopathic killer. This was a family with multiple issues, and I would bet that an in depth analysis of how Lanza was raised, and the issues the parents brought to the family, would identify multiple contributing reasons as to why this happened.

Regarding the 13 year old child of the ‘writer’ Lisa Long, it is highly informative (IMHO) that she takes the time to write about this, letting us all know of the ‘cross she bears’, rather than spending all of her waking hours seeking and pursuing the very best help for this child and her family - irrespective of her byline. This child resents her, and I would bet that it's because she is narcissistic and therefore incapable of being an empathic parent. I'd be willing to bet significant money on this. Actually, I'd be willing to bet my life on this. Most parents would look first at themselves and their parenting if their young child was having major issues. To not look first at yourself and what you are potentially doing wrong is a very strong sign that you are a big part of the problem.

The inability to feel emotion, as it appears Lanza might have been experiencing, can be based in the lack of love and nurturing as a child, including the inability of a parent/parents to see and acknowledge their child as an individual, self-determining, separate life from their own. The lack of proper nurturing during critical periods can lead to a lack of conscience in the child. This is what leads to fourteen year olds in the inner city being capable of cold-blooded murder. In the end, the cumulative effect of all of this is tragedy - often involving those who were not connected in any way.

A bright kid. Bright boys with no adult male to guide them. This is a problem that is hundreds of years old. Read the story of Iccarus and Daedalus. It’s an allegory. Iccarus flies too high (seeks too much knowledge) and is killed. His father warned him. The bright ones see more horror and they have no one to help them deal with it. There is an old saying that there’s a fine line between genius and insanity, and it’s true. Bright young men see further and they see pain and suffering and without a strong male to guide them, they become frustrated. They also have all those teenage hormones and the energy of youth. In many ways, it’s the same problems and concerns we all see, but for them it’s more intense.

**
Agreed. I think this is the MAJOR factor in this story that on one will discuss, especially our wonderful liberals. Where was Dad?

Our son is autistic, but thankfully, I have a wonderful husband who takes his fatheringrole seriously. Takes our son to Boy Scouts, and spends as much with him as he can. I think that and the time spent with his older brother has been immensely helpful for him. They say autistic boys do well with strong fathers or father figures — well, ANY boy does. To saddle a mother with 100% of the responsibility for these boys is far too much for anyone ... but they say up to 80% of or of marriages with special needs children end in divorce from the stress.

She could have driven her husband off ... yet, still ...he could have deserted her also.

This story has NOTHING to do with guns, and everything to do with family and parenting dysfunction.

Childhood neglect and abuse can be enough to make a kid a nutcase.

This video based on an HBO documentary "Child of rage" is worth watching but it's definitely not safe for work:

Like father, like son, only the son was a child when the father died?

Another instance: Multiple men, brothers, too close in age to “learn” bipolar schizo behavior from each other. A genealogy search shows individuals from former generations in mental hospitals.

So why let these men marry and procreate? Because in this family the first signs manifest well into adulthood.

You haven’t seen what I’ve seen, or you wouldn’t be so dismissive.

You imply that to be forcibly admitted to a mental health facility is like the death penalty. I'm on the side of force, frankly, because you have an ace in the hole--it costs a bundle to be institutionalized. They generally are trying to get a patient released, not hanging on to them for dear life.

IOW--you can get out of the institution.

She writes that Dad is mentally ill himself, doesn’t live with them.

No, AxisI and AxisII diagnoses have a strong genetic component. Twin studies.

The woman is trying to tell you that her son goes into uncontrollable fits of rage and that he will soon be to large for her to control and you suggest a spanking? She needs help.

Can be both. It is not learned per se, but a complex stimulus response from the environment enabled to some extent by the genes.

No I didnt suggest a spanking

I was answering someone else who mentioned spanking...

Read my comment again...

I go on to separate the kid from the spanking comments...

Those other 2 children should be put somewhere away from the dangerous juvenile for their safety...

It used to be that if a woman wouldnt separate from her dangerous wife beating husband that the children would be taken into protective custody...

Since she CLAIMS she cant get rid of the mence then she should have already made arrangements for the safety of her other younger children...

It was more an “implied threat” found in a letter she wrote to someone else about poisoning us....and, no, nothing could be done....except to make sure we were not around her.

If we talk about the real problem, of letting mentally ill people roam free to pick up a weapon and do something crazy, we at least are being more productive than the insane idea that gun control will stop this.

For those of you who said I was wrong about deinstitutionalization of the 60/70s resulted in more mass killings, might wish to read this thread:

When my children werte small we lived next to some people who had a 12 year old psycho

she would stand on their stairs andf scream for long intervals and was sneaky and dangerous...

she was bigger than I was and I tried to avoid annoying her...

One afternoon I popped my head out the front door and told my 4 year old daughter not to go anywhere I was about to call her into dinner..

I noticed that the 12 yo was lurking at the corner of our house...

I dished out their plates, told my older son who was doing his homework it was time to eat and went back outside...

No daughter

No HEAVY tricycle..

I went to the neighbors all around to find her and looked everyuwher except the direction of the train tracks 1/4 mile away with houses blocking the view..

Then I decided to walk that way...

although it didnt make sense...

How could she have taken that heavy tricycle with her ???

the 12 yo was coming from that direction and I asked her Have you seen ???

No she simpered in her phony innocent way...

She was usually devious so i ignored the attitude at that time and figured she would tell me if she had seen the child...

I went home and camme out now and again to call my daughter...

One time the 12 yo old was hiding around the corner of my house again andf mocked me and called out in a strange voice and her younger girl friend was giggling...

I was puzzled but ignored the cheek as her usual way of acting out...

finally I could not just stay home waiting I dertermined to check the train tracks and then call the police...

I found my little daughter sitting there ON THE TRACKS with her tricycle behind her...

She was crying and saif that the 12 yo had heard me say not to go anywehere and had come to her as soon as I went back inside and took her by the hand picked up that heavy tricycle and taken them to the tracks ...

she told my daughter that I wanted her to sit there and if she moved I would spank her...

at any moment a train could have come along and killed my little girl...

and nobody would have known how or why she had been there...

dont tell me children cannot be psychopaths...

Wasn’t it timely that Congress had the foresight to legally ban the word “lunatic” from any legislstive language just a couple of weeks ago? Downright prohetic they are.
