It's only a "partial" cave, in that Boehner agrees that the tax rates should go up on those making more than $1 million rather than $250,000 a year.
But if Boehner caves on taxes, who can believe him when it comes to any other red line Obama will try and force him to cross.
Associated Press:
Signaling new movement in "fiscal cliff" talks, House Speaker John Boehner has proposed raising the top rate for earners making more than $1 million, a person familiar with the negotiations said. President Barack Obama, who wants higher top rates for households earning more than $250,000, has not accepted the offer, this person said.
The proposal, however, indicated progress in talks that had appeared stalled. The person would only discuss the plan on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.
As part of a broader budget deal, Boehner is still seeking more spending cuts than Obama has proposed, particularly in mandatory health care spending. Boehner has asked for a long-term increase in eligibility age for Medicare and for lower costs-of-living adjustments for Social Security.
Boehner's tax proposal was first reported by Politico.
A Boehner aide would not comment on the report.
At issue are expiring tax rates that would automatically increase on Jan. 1 for virtually every income tax payer if Congress and the president don't act. Steep budget cuts are also scheduled to kick in, unless Congress and Obama agree to forestall them with other deficit reduction measures.

...unexpectedly...
I’m shocked ... shocked!
And didn’t we ALL know Boehner would cave? Didn’t we?
Throw that bum out and elect a Speaker with a set of stones, for the love of God!
It is my hope that conceding on this issue might give him the leverage he needs to stand firm against the Assault Weapons Ban that you can bet is right around the corner.
“Never let a crisis go to waste”
He waited until the networks and news media were covering the shootings almost 24/7.. and CAVED in the middle of that.
Nothing to see here...
Exactly. There’s really no negotiating with Barry anyway. Taking what he was willing to offer in preserving the Bush cuts up to $250K was all that could happen there anyway.
But the House controls spending, that’s the bigger problem anyway, and Boehner and crew have dicked around without really addressing it for two years already anyway!
That’s were the action should be.
Long past time the Republican Party withers on the vine. Why does this country have to have 2 liberal parties?
Lucy, Charlie Brown and the football all over again. Washington needs a complete remake.
Note to Boehner, “find your spine, guts, and gonads!” Note to the House, “find a Speaker with spine, guts, and gonads NOW.”

Sorry Drew, but that is naive thinking. The Democrats view any effort to compromise as capitulation. If the Republicans cave on taxes, they will cave on gun control. The Dems know that all too well, and the Republicans will just take it with barely a whimper.
You’re absolutely right. I keep hearing about Boehner “caving”. There is NOTHING the Republicans can do to prevent taxes from going up. Literally nothing. The only thing he can do is to negotiate spending cuts. But on the tax issue, its a done deal.
PLEASE make that weeping, overtanned, nicotine addicted, RINO loser go away! PLEASE!
"It's been shown by IRS records that if you raise the capital gains/dividend tax you bring in LESS money in actual dollars into the treasury, why do we need to do this, and how will YOU make up this new shortfall?"
In '08 0boober's answer was "it was a matter of "fairness." , so OK it's a matter of fairness that we increase taxes and actually cut money from the treasury, how than mr. president, do we make up the difference???
Boehner and the GOP need to stop playing the progressive game and start arguing with mathematical facts. Put it in terms that the average young single cosmo reading gal (who seems to be the new demographic) can understand. In other words stop arguing emotionally and start using logic. The community organizer will fold like he did in the first debate when Romney actually gave him some tough questions.
I think you missed the boat. Boehner just called Obama’s bluff and you allowed yourself to have been spun by Politico (it has already been reject).
Maybe Bonehead can up his offer from 1 trillion in tax increases to
2 trillion in tax increases and Obama will accept. After all if Bonehead
is willing to go to 1 trillion, why not 2 or 3 trillion.
bump!
Because we can’t create a third party don’t you know.
I was told when I registered as a Republican in Louisiana in 1961 that I was wasting my vote because the winner would be elected in the Democrat Primary which I would not be allowed to vote in.
It takes time to build a third party that would be viable but you got to start some time if you want real change.
Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening. We are too busy fighting ourselves on issues like the War on Drugs, etc. Most of us are not “pure” enough on our positions to even get agreement among ourselves much less decide on a platform that would embrace a true majority of voters.
The Democrats don’t have to divide us, we do that ourselves. We accuse the Liberals of thinking they “know everything”, but I see the same attitude here.
Look what happened here during our primary. We couldn’t agree on one canditate because of “flaws” of not being the perfect one.
It’s our problem, and until we find a way of finding the best instead of the perfect, we will remain powerless with RINO’s in charge of the opposition.
Boehner signs on to the NO GROWTH, continued high unemployment scheme...
Way to go, dunce...
Oh, they'll cave on gun control. Of this, I have no doubt. It'll only be a matter of how much they'll cave.
