That looks like an M1 Carbine. I would have expected an M4 or maybe a Galil.

Perhaps the teachers get second hand weapons and the new stuff is reserved for active IDF.

Anyway, I had a couple of the Universal M1 Carbine knock offs, and they were accurate, reliable weapons.

Their overall quality was not the best, but they worked.

The M1 Carbine replaced the Garand for standard issue in WWII, particularly in the Pacific Front. I own 4 of them and they aren’t pea shooters, despite how they look.

The M1 Carbine has been a very popular weapon in Israel since its founding. Although it never caught on, Israeli Military Industries (IMI) developed the Magal as a weapon for Israeli police which was chambered in .30 carbine, and used regular M1/M2 magazines:
