Romney Campaign Paid $33 Million to Two Consulting Firms With Ties to Key Staffers

The Romney campaign spent an estimated $356 million between January 1, 2011 and October 17, 2012 in its unsuccessful effort to defeat incumbent President Barack Obama.

According to Federal Election Commission documents, as reported by OpenSecrets.org, $33 million of this amount was paid to two consulting firms with ties to key staffers at both the Romney campaign and the RNC.

Targeted Victory LLC, a Minnesota company with executive offices in Virginia, was paid $17 million for digital communications by the Romney campaign. FLS Connect LLC, an Arizona corporation with headquarters in Minnesota, was paid $16 million for voter contact and telemarketing services. Again, this is through October 17th, the final amount is likely much higher.

Based on press reports and publicly available business incorporation documents, it appears that three individuals had control of these funds: Tony Feather and Michael Beach at Targeted Victory LLC; Tony Feather and David James at FLS Connect LLC.

Significantly, key staffers at both the Romney campaign and the RNC have close recent ties with both firms.

One prominent figure at the Romney campaign -- Political Director Rich Beeson -- and one prominent figure at the RNC -- Chief of Staff Jeff Larson -- were both until recently partners at FLS Connect LLC. It's unclear what, if any, ongoing relationship they may have with the company. A second prominent player in the Romney campaign -- Digital Director Zac Moffat -- has not fully disclosed what, if any, ongoing business relationship he maintains with Targeted Victory LLC. Press reports have referred to Moffat as the co-founder of Targeted Victory LLC.

Given Romney's loss to President Obama, the return on investment for this $33 million paid to a handful of well connected consultants has come under harsh questioning from many quarters.

You’re right, basil. Libs are growing bolder every day.

There’s no doubt is my mind that they’d exterminate Christian Conservatives if they could. Life would be so much more pleasant for them if we weren’t here to cramp their style.

IMHO, the ONLY thing holding them back is the 2nd. Amendment.

Newt has something that Romney doesn’t, Newt could speak from the heart and knows how to change things and to fight, he very well may have totally reshaped both campaigns, and the national dialogue, Obama’s image, invigorated the race and defeated Obama.

Romney was having to run against his own internal politics and beliefs, he was running against a man that he largely agreed with.

Romney has fluxuated between the two parties during his life, he only settled on republican, for political expediency.

We will be hearing from these idiots in 2016 when they pick the next creep in line who won't win.

Yep, and they'll be telling us the third time is the charm.... (eyes rolling)

The Independent Party's numbers must be swelling with Bohner's ouster of conservatives on the finance committee(s). RINOs are the problem, not the fix.

From the article: “FLS Connect, LLC was founded on July 27, 1999 in Arizona by Tony Feather, a KARL ROVE protege and the political director of George W. Bush’s 2000 Presidential campaign; Jeff Larson, another KARL ROVE protege who has served as Chief of Staff to RNC Chairman Reince Priebus since January, 2011...”

The Fat Man really gets around.

The only thing I can come up with ansel, is the leaders of both parties are in cahoots...just one, big, happy, back slappin’, palm greasin’, power/$$$ hungry club.

You are absolutely right.

When two lousy senators get the nominations for their respective parties it does spell doom, and now proven.

It’s going to take a century to clean that mess up.

The US Senate is NOT the body to find presidents.

Oh I think Romney never would have sent 90B to cronies with bad ideas ...he never would have vetoed the Keystone pipeline, he would be doing everything he could to help small business, never would have taken over GM.
Also, there was a story that the other side hoped would mean something - about Romney counseling someone not to have an abortion - like there was something wrong with that.

No one is perfect but in a normal world I think he would have been a POTUS who could have done a lot of good. But we are no longer in a normal American world. Stunningly, Obama has succeeded.

You posted that to the wrong person, this was my post to you.

I was correcting you about Newt.

Well I suppose you are right, I didn’t really address the Newt issue.

For sure he would have fought! And no question that he’s brilliant. I just thought that the rats would have made mincemeat about him over his past - they already took him out once over nothing. Bastards.

Unfortunately, instead of having to deal with a firebrand, history making, right winger, who changed America in his 1994 house version of the Reagan Revolution, (both adamantly opposed by Mitt, who even left the party for many years), who had deeply converted to Catholicism since his scandal.

Instead they had the Mormon Bishop, who disliked Reagan and left his party, was against the Contract with America, who gave us obamacare and gay marriage and gun control, who was pro-abortion, for homosexual Scout leaders and military, and who turned the entire republican brand into the most white bread, out of touch bunch of socially liberal, indiferrent to Christianity, rich guys imaginable.

We have been hurt badly by this Romney debacle and we are in deep trouble, his image as the face of the GOP is the worst one imaginable, he even hurt our own image of ourselves, as we now wonder about our own platform, Romney’s liberalism has deeply penetrated the GOP.

I appreciate your well thought out opinion.

The one I really want - if I could be the one to choose - is Sarah. But at this point it’s just wishful thinking.

Same here, the giant, Palin.

I only was using Gingrich because of what was in the primary, which was slim pickings because it had a well-funded machine, 800 pound gorilla who had been keeping out serious competition since 2006.

Romney has controlled the nomination process, as much as is possible, since 2006, which kept his opponents to relatively unfunded, small time challengers.
