Bob Costas: ‘If Jovan Belcher did not possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive’

NBC sportscaster Bob Costas used his weekly monologue on “Sunday Night Football” to discuss the fallout of the tragedy in Kansas City, urging viewers to move past the cliched coverage of the “perspective” gleaned from the news that linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and then himself Saturday morning.

Costas focused much of his monologue on a column by Fox Sports’ Jason Whitlock, which argued that “current gun culture simply ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy.” Costas said that although he often doesn’t agree with Whitlock, he found his argument to be spot on this time.

In the 90s WRKO Boston host Gene Burns made the point after the Long Island Railroad incident that if someone on that train had a gun, there could have been fewer victims (if they could have wounded or killed the shooter). It’s a tough call, I know. 6 of Colin Ferguson’s victims died. Colin still breathes.

It’s just typical liberal drivel. Their problems are never their fault, they always need to blame someone else. They don’t want to hear the logical argument that guns are nothing more than rescue equipment/tool designed to save a life.

Hey Bob, you are a jack@$$. He could have taken her in a car and run headon into an 18 wheeler.

If we really want to make a point about Costas’ anti-gun blathering, we shoul all stop watching NBC and most specifically NBC sports. There’s one thing that will get NBC executives attention in a hurry and that would be thei rating going into a free fall......

If Bob Costas didn’t laugh at his own jokes, nobody would think they were funny.

I will be waiting for Bobby to rant about the following athletes and their weapons of choice:

MacTavish missed the 1984–85 season after being convicted of vehicular homicide, having struck and killed a young woman while he was driving under the influence of alcohol. MacTavish pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol in an accident the night of January 25, 1984, in Peabody, Massachusetts. Kim Radley, 26, of West Newfield, Maine, died four days later of injuries sustained in the crash.[5] MacTavish spent a year in jail as punishment for this offence. While incarcerated, he watched most of the games that were televised. After MacTavish was released from prison, the Bruins offered to let him out of his contract. MacTavish accepted.

Robert Rozier (a.k.a. Robert Rameses): Ever the overachiever, Rozier confessed to killing seven white people and was arrested and charged on October 31, 1986.

Hiroshi Ogawa:On November 18, 2004, Ogawa (who was extremely in debt) killed a 67 year old woman named Kazuko Nishiuchi and stole 1.75 million yen (approximately $20,300) of her employer's money. When Nishiuchi refused to give Hiroshi Ogawa the money, he pushed her down a flight of stairs, stole the money and threw Nishiuchi into his car, drove her to a pond and pulled a Norman Bates on the car with her in it, allowing her to drown in a steel coffin at the bottom of the pond.

Mark Rogowski:On March 21, 1991, Rogowski spent the day with old-friend Jessica Bergsten who was later reported missing. Her body was eventually found in the Californian desert, although a proper identification was impossible due to the decomposed state of her body. Rogowski later plead guilty to beating Bergsten with a 'Club,' raping her and stuffing her body in a bag and smothering her with his hand to eventually stop her breathing.

Donte Stallworth:DUI Manslaughter (Driving under the influence of alcohol)

Charles E. Smith:vehicular homicide

Hey Costas,

We’ve had a “gun culture” on this continent for 250 years. We’ve had Football for maybe 120 years and we’ve had a cultural bent torwards violence for 50 years. Let’s see, as the cultural bent towards violence in Music, Movies, Video games, etc has been accellerating, the incidences of violence are escalating...

Hmmm...

I feel for the victim and her family and Romeo. The murderer not so much, he knew he was injured and kept playing. The docs that clear him are culpable here, plain and simple.

You want to fix the concussion issue. Go back to lighter helmets and make personal fouls with helmet leads a 25 yard penalty and automatic ejection from game and review for possible extra suspensions.

The NFL is duplicitous, I watched several plays this weekend of offensive players overtly leading with their heads into defenders who were not leading with theirs and no penalty was called, reverse that and it is called almost every time. Just like the pass interference they call it on defense to help offenses move the ball to raise scores and drive “more excitement” for the marketing. Only called on offense when it is one of the teams everyone wants to lose, like Patriots, Steelers, Broncos etc...

Guns responsible? Could it be that Jovan “acted stupidly”? I think Costas was just serving his masters, one of which is the NFL.

If Jovan Belcher exercised some self-control, they’d still be alive. But some parts of our society want him to be the victim.

Professional football is violent. People have been killed playing football. Should we ban it?

Dear Mr. Costas:

A few years back a fellow living not far from me killed his wife and then committed suicide with a machete.

I will send you links to the appropriate news articles if you are interested.

Can’t stand that little twit. He is one of the main reasons I quit watching the Olympics for years and years.

Dollars to donuts Costas has guns to protect his mansion(s). Or his bodyguards, at least, are armed.

Hey Bob, how about we just make it illegal to kill someone???

That would cover guns, knives, clubs, etc etc...

THIS LAW WOULD HAVE SAVED HER!!!

A man doesn’t need to use a knife to kill another comparably-sized man....

A little pouf like Costas would have no knowledge of fisticuffs. Probably cried to the teacher when the other 9th grade boys messed up his hair.
