Ice Age warmth wiped out lemmings, study finds

Lemmings became "regionally extinct" five times due to rapid climate change during the last Ice Age, scientists have found.

Instead the tests revealed that genetically distinct populations of lemmings were "present at different points in time" during the Late Pleistocene, 11,700 to around 126,000 years ago, meaning that the lemming population had been wiped out multiple times and then re-colonised some time after, possibly from populations in eastern Europe or Russia.
The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Natural Academy of Sciences, found that these "regional extinctions" occurred during periods of rapid warming within the last Ice Age.

This is problematic, because there is a modern case, of two years, back to back, that caused extensive change, and all because of the jet stream over North America.
The first of the two years, the jet stream stayed unusually South for the duration of winter, resulting in cold temperatures dragged south from the north pole into the United States. In Oh Canada, however, temperatures were very temperate, much warmer than normal. This in turn resulted in a lot more greenery and a lot more lemmings, and in turn, a population explosion of lemming predators, specifically the Snowy Owl.
The next year, the jet stream went north and stayed there. This meant temperate temperatures in the US, but up in Oh Canada, they were buried in snow and very cold temperatures.
This resulted in a scant year for lemmings, but the Snowy Owls went south in great numbers, to parts of the US where they are seldom seen.
Was a scientist to look at just these two years, they might assume a very large and healthy lemming population, which was wiped out in a snap ice age.
Must have been all those fossil fuels the lemmings were burning.
Lemmings got a bad rap after the Disney nature movie we all saw as kids. Turns out, or so I’ve heard, Disney producers herded them all off the cliffs—don’t ask, I don’t know why— and created this urban legend that lemmings commit mass suicide whenever they over populate.
If only it were true, and if only liberals really were like them....
