The year 2011 marked the sixth consecutive year that pennies and nickels cost more to produce than they were worth in the market.

Nickels are 75% copper and 25% nickel. The “melt value” of today’s nickels is higher than the face value. They will go for the same reason silver was taken out of circulation decades ago.

Because currently, there's almost a nickel's worth of metal in a nickel. They know what's coming.

Agree about the penny and the dollar bill. They need to change the paper for currency. I think I read that the nickle also costs more to produce than it is worth. I think that’s why. Quite frankly, I don’t care about either being eliminated.

I agree. The $1 bill should have been eliminated decades ago. But, somehow the govt keeps screwing up the minting of a $1 coin.

Why nickels?

Well here's the case against pennies as a perky video:

Death to Pennies And in the middle of it the case against nickels is presented as a throw-away line.

BTW, I agree with abolishing dollar bills, once we don't have pennies or nickels, we should move to the more economical dollar coin, and probably add a two dollar coin as well.

I may be just cynical about this but nickels actually contain a good bit of nickel so they have some intrinsic value

I believe that I read on FR that it has not been economically viable to produce nickels and pennies since 1990 or so and that producing them costs more than they are worth...
