Hostess Brands Inc., the maker of the iconic snack, announced today that it will liquidate the entire company because not enough striking employees returned to work by a Thursday evening deadline set by the company.
"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said Gregory F. Rayburn, chief executive officer. "Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders."
Hostess said it will seek bankruptcy court permission to close its business and sell its assets, "including its iconic brands and facilities. Bakery operations have been suspended at all plants."
"The Board of Directors authorized the wind down of Hostess Brands to preserve and maximize the value of the estate after one of the Company's largest unions, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM), initiated a nationwide strike that crippled the Company's ability to produce and deliver products at multiple facilities," the company said in a statement.
"We simply do not have the financial resources to survive an ongoing national strike," Rayburn said in a statement Wednesday. "Therefore, if sufficient employees do not return to work by 5 p.m., EST, on Thursday to restore normal operations, we will be forced to immediately move to liquidate the entire company, which will result in the loss of nearly 18,000 jobs."

If you remember the early 80’s Delta Airlines shut down becasue of union demands....
Actually, I know some people who make their living doing just that--'boxing up' manufacturing facilities and shipping them to the buyers--or to the boat taking them overseas. They have been busy for most of the last 30 years.
I always liked those spongy pink thingies. Will see if our grocery store has any left today — and Twinkies. Stock up for the apocalypse. Aren’t these things supposed to stay good for thousands of years — like cockroaches?
Sure glad Little Debbies isn’t going out of business. I love those Christmas Tree Cakes.
Betcha they’re proud of themselves now, huh?
I'm sure the Twinkie will resurface elsewhere, its unique, uhh, *recipe* sold off as an asset through the bankruptcy proceedings. I hope the team that designed that product did a good job of archiving its development details... seems like that could be a valuable reference for the emergency / survival foods business.
See #39. “Great minds”... ;)
So they say.
Cute and funny! Not much has been able to make me laugh since 11/6.
I used to do work for this union. The day we signed our contract with them, they assured me that my little company would do excellent work for them. Because, otherwise, large men with baseball bats would show up at our doors to persuade us to do better.
Scum.
Dammit, I’d forgotten that they owned Dolly Madison too.
hahahahahaha.... way to go, union turds. No cake for you!
Cue music...
Look for the union label,
when you are hungry but have no job.
Remember somewhere, your union leader,
is rich and fat, and he don’t care.
So stop complaining, and blame yourself,
while you beg Massa Obama to pay your WAY!
Tell me about it. I do derive some grim satisfaction, though, from seeing a union's bluff get called.
Some vanilla ~ extract in alcohol preferably ~ and, for non diabetics, you can put in sugar ~ and i have no idea how much of that you need.
You can bake this like any cake, or in a pan, or one of those little electric cookie/cake baker things ~ $20 at jc penney.
it should end up the same color, taste and texture. if your mix has a corn taste to it what you need to do is sprinkle some crushed red pepper into the mix ~ it'll kill the corn taste!
Then, the cream mix ~ that's something i haven't quite matched but i prefer light cream cheese here ~ and i make them like little pancakes.
Years ago we made lebenteengazillion d'oro yaki's for a Japanese folk festival ~ basically a Portuguese style small pancake filled with sweet rice and red bean mixture ~ but in the end little different than a Twinkie ~ there are several recipes for these things so you might be able to try them all to see what comes up with the best taste ~ for you!
We spent hundreds of hours getting the sweet rice and red bean mix right ~ you must first boil the beans, but most of the rest of the process can be handled well in any microwave.
Don’t need them in mining either...many, many, mines in the US and Canada are non-union.
I’m working on a huge mine project in Canada and the project is non-union...lots of card-carrying union workers, but not recognized at this project.
In the union world, thats called STICKING IT TO THE MAN !!!
Im sure theyre all very proud of themselves now, and the union-apologists on this site are PROUD of them to.
Eastern Airlines too. A&P left PA because of union strikes.
