Karl Rove is feeling the heat.
The face of the historic $1 billion plan to unseat President Barack Obama and turn the Senate Republican, Rove now finds himself the leading scapegoat for its failure. And he's scrambling to protect his status as a top GOP money man by convincing disappointed donors to his Crossroads groups that he did the best he could with their $300 million.
Sources tell POLITICO that some donors have called Crossroads officials to ask how their polling could have been so far off, while others are openly grumbling that the groups should have spent more on the ground game. Rival operatives -- long frustrated by Rove's dominance of big GOP money -- are seizing on the discontent, questioning whether he's hurting the cause and privately urging donors to shut him out.
During a secret Thursday afternoon conference call with his benefactors, Rove laid out the analytics behind his assertions to donors that a massive late-game advertising push would expand the electoral map into Pennsylvania and deliver the White House and the Senate.
The call was civil, focusing on questions like, "'where was my strategy, was it right, was it wrong? What did we find out that we didn't know before?' That kind of thing -- nothing negative, no recriminations or blame," said Minnesota media mogul Stan Hubbard.

According to reports, Rove got to keep 10% of what he raised through Crossroads and walks away from this election fiasco with a hefty $33,000,000. Not a bad payout for a backstabbing cork-screwing double dealing sell out.
Rove claimed on FOX News a few days ago that he takes no income from Crossroads. I found it hard to believe that he’s doing this for charity.
How and why could the polls be so wrong?

Yup. He was in it for the money and power. Probably thought he’d be Romney’s brain too.
If there was some sort of movement toward Romney at the end, it was too late. Too many voters had already voted early.
That's exactly what happened to Santorum in Michigan. Some say if he had won Michigan he would have stopped Romney and become the Republican nominee.
Unfortunately his momentum came too late as lots of Republicans did like the Democrats and voted early for convenience rather than wait until all of the available information was in.
When Republicans start behaving like Democrats what should we expect?
Yes, Rove wound up with egg on his face. The only thing he got right was saying that Todd Akin was a surefire loser, and that him staying in would feed the Democrat’s ‘War on Women” theme, not to mention guaranteeing McCaskill’s reelection. He was absolutely right on that score.
Even BEFORE the election I figured Romney had a good (but not sure) chance of losing and so I was wondering how Rove would explain it after spending all their money on nothing.
I noticed he didn't look confident on his FNC analyst appearances the week before when he was saying that Romney was winning.
Yup. Rove has an almost perfect record of torpedoing our conservative candidates/nominees.
Gotta agree with that one, Jim. Unfortunately, Akin's wound was self-inflicted. I'm hoping we can avoid the same mistakes in 2014; Akin, Mourdock, Berg and Thompson all wound up being the weakest candidate in their races, and we should have picked up all four seats with ease.
A quick thanks for all the hard work you and John did in keeping things moving on Tuesday - the news flowed right in, even if most of it was bad.
If we want to win, we must educate. That means more than sound bite commercials once every four years.
We need to start raising the same money every year that we do on presidential years, and we need to spend it on educational commercials, and even movies. Educate the American public to the realities of true liberty, race baiting, the effects of family destruction, the real math of federal outlays, etc.
We need to hand out short, but meaningful pamphlets to our apolytical friends. Educational and patriotic.
We need to hit churches with flyers that point out the clear conflict between God and socialism.
Seriously folks, we need to raise 400% more money than the Dems and we need to spend it on real vote changing information.
So, how do we raise $1 billion every year? We ned to raise about $150/year ($12.50/month) on average from every Republican that cares enough to vote. We need to commit to it and spend the money.
Crossroads did a TON of advertising. And their ads were good.
I don’t blame Rove.
I blame the “gimme” mentality of 50.1% of the American people.
I do take consolation in the fact that the Republicans held the House, and that Obama did not add voters to his 2008 totals...he LOST voters. So that is a good thing.
I am very very sad about the celebration of sodomy in Maine, Maryland and Washington. Frankly, these people have chosen perversion over godliness and nature. So I won’t be spending any time there for vacation...Maine and Washington were not on the short list, but I had considered some time in Maryland.

Rove, for all his faults, has been responsible for the largest source of outside money to Tea Party candidates.
He gave $3-$5 million to Tea Party Senate candidates in 2010, with the exception of Christine O’Donnell, which he knew right away was a lost cause.
And for example, this year Tea Party Senate candidate Richard Murdock in Indiana received was also strongly supported by Rove.
According to the AP: “Crossroads GPS is by far the biggest spender in Indiana, at close to $5 million” our of $20 million spent by outside groups.
