Minnesota first state to defeat gay marriage amendment

With a majority of the state's precincts reporting early Wednesday, Nov. 7, a proposed constitutional amendment to write man-woman marriage into the constitution has apparently lost.

The defeat is historic, making Minnesota the first state to turn back an attempt to write man-woman marriage into a state constitution.

The Associated Press said around 1:45 a.m. that the marriage amendment was defeated.

But Chuck Darrell of Minnesota for Marriage, the lead group supporting the amendment, wasn't giving up.

"No, we're not conceding. There's just too many counties out there," he said.

Meanwhile, Richard Carlbom, campaign manager for Minnesotans United for All Families, the main Vote No group, was leading a noisy celebration in St. Paul.

"Tonight Minnesota proved that love is bigger than government," he said. "Minnesota has become the first state in the nation to beat back a freedom-limiting amendment like this."

In order for constitutional amendments to pass in Minnesota, the "yes" votes must represent a majority not of the votes cast on the amendment question but of the total ballots cast in the election -- a higher bar.

A majority of women and voters under age 50 were against it, while men and those over 50 were in favor. Seven in 10 voters who attend religious services and four in five born-again or evangelical voters favored the amendment. The vote was split along party lines -- three in four Democrats said they voted against it, and three in four Republicans supported it.

Gay marriage is already banned in Minnesota under state law, but amendment proponents said the constitutional provision was necessary to block judges or lawmakers from overturning it.

There was some fraud there that I’m aware of because my militant lesbian cousin let it slip. (She lives in Minnesota) She didn’t come right out and say it but she said that they were having gay and lesbian election eve slumber parties with friends from out of state.

The family of one of her lesbian friends wouldn’t vouch for her to register to vote because they said it was cheating.
